I thought those videos looked amazing on my Q90R. Then I watched them on my CX OLED.

Mind. Blown. HDR on QD-LED just can't compete.

Ok, I have now encountered actually shifting + 4:2:0 and you are correct. It is hugely worse with shifting on. I still hate 4:2:0 without shifting but with it 4:2:0 is shockingly bad, even in game without fine black/white text it is terrible. What a weird screw up, I wonder what they are doing to the image to get it to look like that?

It is really annoying that screen shifting keeps turning itself back on too.

Those videos do seems specifically designed to show the weakness inherent in even good local dimming.

Thus, Samsung Display quit producing LCD and is spending billions of dollars to transition to QD-OLED.

Once those factories are up and running LG will have to come up with something really special to compete (QD-OLED will have better color and probably less burn-in/higher brightness).

(I will still say LCD has a place on the market though, they just need to improve native contrast a bit more and then pump up the zone count, it shouldn't be hard to create visual effects that make LCD "out shine" OLED.)

LCD has NO PLACE EVER ANYMORE. LCD needs to DIE in an trash barrel fire!

Yeah like a really bad song on the radio that the station keeps repeating and repeating.
In time you find yourself tapping your foot and singing along.
It's like being programed.

Ya screen shift has a bug where even if you disable it, it comes back every time you turn the TV back on. Just flip it on and off and then it will stay off until the next time you turn the TV back on then rinse repeat.

OLED can barely do 1000 Nits.
I know, not everything should be about "Nits", but HDR is mastered at up to 10,000 Nits (most commonly between 1,000-4,000), even if you don't particularly want it that is part of the experience movies and games are being created to give.
There is plenty of potential for a high quality LCD to give dramatically better performance in medium-small highlights than OLED.
Of course as soon as OLED can drop to mass adoption prices that will practically spell the end of LCD, but the technology itself isn't a dead end yet.

Micro LED will fulfill the maximum potential of HDR, until then we have to split the experience into two halves.

The ironic part is that, even though HDR content looks spectacular on OLED, the content is better processed and mastered with dual-layer IPS monitors, which is the only viable panel tech (that I know of) capable of achieving some of the highest specs for brightness, while still maintaining near-zero luminance for blacks and practically absolute color space coverage.

It's also pretty funny that some companies are going the opposite direction of the normal tendency of the consumer market, which is LCD-->OLED. Eizo released some months ago their flagship professional dual-layer IPS monitor after having launched a similar model with an OLED panel. Besides the obvious spec differences, OLED is also worse than LCD for calibration, as the former needs recalibration much more frequently.

Don't get me wrong, though. I love OLED - if not for anything else, at least for the absolute blacks and near-instant response times.
