I think Next gen consoles are likely to be adopting new storage protocol standards than old SATA especially for a product with a planned life cycle of 3-5 years average leaving out M.2 interface connection would be really disappointing for a cutting edge console or so they say. Thankfully its not my market of interest as gaming days are far behind me now.

Still have my M500DC 480 GB with over 480 TB written and still chugs along to this day at 88% life remaining on the SMART. I've had very reliable luck with their drives since. Unfortunately the QLC trend is a massive regression in performance and reliability concerns in the long term. On the controller side things have matured alot since the Sandforce days.

You can find good deals on a M500DC 800GB on ebay I grabbed a few when a seller was selling brand new sealed trays for 80 dollars a piece.

Oh yeah, and they'll use special plastic like the 360 hdd and demand a premium for that special plastic. Hopefully, people will be smarter these but I kind of doubt it. People still preorder ....

Im pretty sure most times someone talks about their earlier gen SSD still running.. its an M4.
I have Mushkin 60gb many years old and stil works great.

The 360's hard drive wasn't just a "make money from special plastic" scheme. That was a time when memory cards were still the primary storage device on consoles. Gamers were used to pulling out their card and going to a friends house with an extra controller and playing with their saves. Microsoft wanted that same use case to be applicable with the hard drive and there wasn't an industry standard form factor that was rugged enough to do that, so they made their own. They couldn't just use a USB or FireWire drive because USB was way too slow at the time and they didn't want the 360 to look like a Sega 32xCD abomination with multiple power bricks.

Of course, they ruined all that with the HDdvd and Kinect years later, but that's beside the point.

I think that unless games are optimized to load textures in a specific way that somehow magically makes the PS5 load lightning fast, I think it will simply finally make consoles on-par with PC.
