Don't forget, consoles just have ram. PCs have vram and system ram.

that's what I was waiting to read. I was waiting for how it's gonna screw up PCs due to custom config, and how you can ONLY buy them from sony, cuz custom config. when they'll probably just be 660P tier units in reality... This is the part where someone tells us that they'll be using top of the line 1-2TB Sammy units, but they're "custom" still. so you can only source from Sony.

instead, it's just marketing bullshart & a worthless reporter.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.

These next-generation consoles will be using NVME SSD's as a texture cache as well as a storage media. If you can recall how RAGE used "MegaTextures" (a single file that holds almost all textures in a given open-world scenario), you can essentially read off of a single file almost all textures a game will use, 4K performance is still paramount to using an SSD in a traditional system, but these aren't traditional systems... If you recall, RAGE had abyssmal texture pop-in on Video Cards of that era and still has quite a bit of Texture Pop-in today.

With that knowledge, I think it's clear to see PCs that do not have NVME SSDs will have their performance obliterated. You better hope they decide on having the Texture Cache option available on PCs rather than simply offloading that cache onto the GPU which would require 16GB+ VRAM.

Am I in agreement that the title of the article is sensationalized? Yes.
Your video talks about using a pagefile as virtual ram and that is random read dependent, not sequential related. I doubt the drive in the PS5 will have twice the random read as a 2013 840 evo or 1/4 that of my 2017 os drive.
And streaming megatextures has been on pc, and neglected, but still available since dx11. They had that mars demo thing that I was hoping would make up for the 3GB vram in my 780tis at the time, but it never did.

Maybe they will use a shader cache, also not new.

IDSoft's megatexture engine works/worked fine, but only one 1 gpu. It's one of few engines that genuinely would/will never support dual GPU.

well, at least... it ran fine if you had the hardware for it. IDK how it worked out on console equiv hardware, probably terrible.... kinda how it works.

either way, the only people this could possible affect are folks on spinning rust, and they're likely not pushing 4K textures as it is sooooo.

i'm sure this affects someone somewhere, but really... c'mon lol. Can we pretend like we've been thru this before, and that we have knowledge of similar claims from other sectors of the tech industry, n that it always ends up being nonsense?

the take away should be this - YAY! Consoles are finally starting off with SSDs, and cross/next gen stuff will "finally" be programmed for it.

= less waiting on load times due to terrible CPU utilization... that's all i'm hearing.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.

The PS4 has GDDR5 and DDR3?
The standard PS4 has only GDDR5,
The PS4 Pro has both GDDR5 and DDR3,
The XBOX ONE has only DDR3 and On-chip ESRAM
The X has 12 GB GDDR5

Saying something like "Consoles only have RAM", makes no logical sense.

Consoles can use whatever type of memory a manufacturer wants, and in however much amount they feel comfortable.

We could very well see a system with 4GB HBM2+16GB DDR4, or any other wacky combination you can think of.

As a logical PC gamer, I love when consoles can innovate as much as possible. The weaker the Consoles, the weaker the PC's and the more lackluster our games become, not only in visuals but in what's actually possible for game developers to do! Better consoles means better games for everyone. period.

There has never been a game purely programmed for SSD's only. This generation will be the first time where this will become a reality. Just because the RAGE engine didn't or couldn't use multiple GPUs doesn't mean that it entirely rules out texture caching or Dual GPU setups using caching on an SSD. Very much a false-equivalency. Especially when you consider MCM's will not operate like SLI or CFX of olde.
