[lenovo] Intel Thunderbolt controller have defective firmware (all vendors)

EDIT: after looking at this a bit deeper, it seems that all machines with TB3 and the mentioned old thunderbolt firmware are affected regardless. So look out for firmware updates from your manufacturer and stop using the TB3 port(s) for the time being.

Quote:
Systems may experience any of the following symptoms:

USB-C port not working
Intel Thunderbolt controller not visible in the OS/Device Manager
USB-C or Thunderbolt docking stations not visible or having connectivity problems
HDMI output not available
System battery not charging with a USB-C power adapter connected to the USB-C port
Intel Thunderbolt pop-up error message
Intel Thunderbolt safe mode error message
BIOS Thunderbolt communication error or hang during POST
Quote:
Lenovo remains quiet about the reason for the failures, but the list of affected ThinkPad laptops leaves only one logical explanation: Only ThinkPads with Thunderbolt Controllers are affected, so the Intel Thunderbolt Controllers seem to the cause of these issues.

Only more expensive models like the ThinkPad X1 Carbon, ThinkPad T480 or ThinkPad X390 are affected. More affordable L/E ThinkPads are free of issues, as are ThinkPads with AMD processors.
My T480 also has suffered degradation of TB controller. It only uses USB-C and I exclusively use it with a thunderbolt dock for work.

Fun times waiting 1 month for their understaffed Memphis support center to fix this. Guess I'll stick with my T430 for now.

I sure hope the firmware will be updated quickly.. I'd really like Thunderbolt to be an open standard or at least, without issues with the latest USB that's going to come.

i wonder if this is the source of 24 lenovo T450-560s imploding at our cali office a few weeks/months back.
ended up having to move them back to usb3.0 docks, while awaiting all new hardware.

Is everything with Intel thunderbolt about to crap out or is this just limited to Lenovo's slim sleek high end implementation?

Updated firmware already out on Lenovo website as update, or through Vantage software.

oh, yeah... that's a good point. we were using USB3.0 adapters on C/TB docks.

my original opinion is that us rolling out bitlocker bitlocked the addressable storage on the docks, causing them to die.

Have not had any of the issue or have not had any user reports?

Apparently this not only affects Lenovo, but can be any other manufacturer.

I just did some ticket review to respond to this accurately!!

LOL!

checking back on my notes, I decided it was 100% bitlocker related, as it bricked multiple identical docks across multiple laptop OEMs.

unfortunately, we've yet to get a single office to send back one of the dead docks for proper investigation, but based on all the clues we came to the conclusion that BitLocker encrypted the drive storage on the docks, as they show up as a Z: drive in windows.

after bitlocking, z drive gone, and ability to see the partition on the dock is also gone.

and by after bitlocking, I mean like 15 minutes after rolling out the policy. Unfortunately, the top tier infrastructure bros are cliche af, so I'm unaware of how they mitigated the issue going forward. Likely restricted bit-locker to C Drives only.

do you have many remote offices? We have huge issues with hardware poaching. Management will gut new hire packets, & pawn off ancient systems on the new hires instead.

so frustrating, because all they'd need to do is ask, n they'd get just as new, and even higher end hardware. Anyways, These boss ladies would've never had issues if they would've stuck to the original USB3.04K lenovo docks they had.
