It's what I'm considering as a budget upgrade for my brother on 2500K.
Z170 boards are cheap and I already have enough DDR3 memory.
Give the russians and chinese a few weeks and they will figure it out.
Intel very often introduces a socket which is only physically incompatlible but would otherwise work perfectly fine.
PGA478 CPU's were compatible with LGA775.
Some BGA intel mobile chips (with eDRAM) were released in china on LGA1150 adapters. They could overclock just fine.
It's an endless cycle of Intel fighting the modders.
Basically cover/swap some pins and mod the bios.
Intel Management Engine is the main culprit in most cases.
