[CBC]Apple will pay up to $500 million US to settle slow iPhone lawsuit

Apple Inc. has agreed to pay up to $500 million US to settle litigation accusing it of quietly slowing down older iPhones as it launched new models, to induce owners to buy replacement phones or batteries.

I remember hearing about phones slowing down, but I never knew it was apple doing it on purpose to old phones, that's pretty rotten.

What a bias OP, they slowed down the phones so they didn't die instantly like Android phones with old batteries. As soon as a user replaces the old battery with a new battery the phone works exactly how it should.

Apple should've communicated that properly instead of just silently adding the throttle though.

They definitely should have properly communicated the cause of the throttling. When going into an Apple store they would run their Apple diagnostics and recommend a battery replacement before this was public. They weren't recommending purchasing a new phone. They're now transparent and users can check their own battery health.

Battery health degraded
If battery health has degraded significantly, the below message will also appear:

Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity. More about service options…

This message does not indicate a safety issue. Your battery can still be used. However, you may be experiencing more noticeable battery and performance issues. A new replacement battery will improve your experience.

Users should still have the right to repair their own devices though.

They can repair them. Procuring parts is on them, so is the consequence of failure.

its called planned obsolescence, and its a standard practice in the Western economy. It's most common in the mobile space, more tablets & phones than laptops, but they suffer too. This is why you should reformat OEM laptops after purchasing, and NOT re-install OEM's management/update tools.

Sounds like some one is drinking the apple coolaid.
This isnt what the case is about. They were slowing phones down that had never been used/had new batterys. There were benchmarks on jail broken firmwares between a old firmware and upgraded firmware.
At first apples excuse was new firmwares are more demanding and slowing phones down.
Stripped down jailbroken firmwares proved that to be false because they found the code that was putting a throttle in place and you could disable it.

It wasnt until after they got caught out they came out to say they were doing it for the battery. But even when you went and got a new battery fitted they only slightly raised the throttling up and you had to jailbreak to completely remove it.

Good to see they are being held accountable.
