[TomsHardware] AMD Wins El Capitan

Quote:
AMD scored another big win today with the announcement that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has selected its next-next-gen EPYC Genoa processors with the Zen 4 architecture and Radeon GPUs to power the $600 million EL Capitan, a two-exaflop system that will be faster than the top 200 supercomputers in service today, combined.
Nice win for Zen4 and Radeon Instinct.

That's more of a "see Apple support generic PC hardware other than what they use themselves in their devices" aka they buy Intel only CPUs and AMD only GPUs. Who knows if they will ever switch away from Intel, they are probably getting their pockets lined too well to bother to do that even when it's way better for customers. MacOS is nothing more than yet another nix clone. Want it free? Install Linux, not that big of a difference and there are entire distros that look very similar and simplified as MacOS even on the GUI side.

---

DoE sure seems to have some damn excess of energy and $$$ to burn.

This shows the efficiency and scalability of Zen, AMD have done an amazing job.

What is the purpose of this machine? Is it for nuclear weapons simulation (nuclear weapons fall under the jurisdiction of the DOE)?
