[AnandTech] AMD's RDNA 2 Gets A Codename: “Navi 2X” Comes This Year With 50% Improved Perf-Per-Watt

Source: https://www.anandtech.com/show/15591...ed-perfperwatt

Quote:
While AMD’s Financial Analyst Day is first and foremost focused on the company’s financial performance – it’s right there in the title – this doesn’t stop the company from dropping a nugget or two of technical information along the way, to help excite investors on the future of the company.

One such nugget this year involves AMD’s forthcoming RDNA 2 family of client GPUs. The successor to the current RDNA (1) “Navi” family, RDNA 2 has been on AMD’s roadmap since last year. And it’s been previously revealed that, among other things, it will be the GPU architecture used in Microsoft’s forthcoming Xbox Series X gaming console. And while we’re still some time off from a full architecture reveal from AMD, the company is offering just a few more details on the architecture.

First and foremost, RDNA 2 is when AMD will fill out the rest of its consumer product stack, with their eye firmly on (finally) addressing the high-end, extreme performance segment of the market. The extreme high end of the market is small in volume, but it’s impossible to overstate how important it is to be seen there – to be seen as competing with the best of the best from other GPU vendors. While AMD isn’t talking about specific SKUs or performance metrics at this time, RDNA 2 will include GPUs that address this portion of the market, with AMD aiming for the performance necessary to deliver “uncompromising” 4K gaming.

"forgetting" or pinching pennies by using existing stock?

still exited to see something. 5700XT is a good tease. Ready to see it on steroids.

n hopefully that "Shared architecture" stuff actually translates to something this time around.

Nvidia gave Ray Tracing to previous cards. Is AMD going to do the same knowing full well 5700/5700 XT can do it!?!

I guess they don't want to steal RDNA 2's thunder but they best make it retroactive. They show the 5700 doing ray tracing and then AMD ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I hope this is sarcasm because have you actually seen the performance of even cards like the 1080ti trying to pull RT? The stuff nightmares are made out of.

N E WAYS...

I'm hoping this 4k talk holds true. > 2080ti performance at a fair price likely has me sold... may even end up breaking my "no gpu over $500 (or thereabouts)" rule. Must wait to overhaul pc... must resist.

The 5700 seems to have done well enough in that drone video. I even ran that drone benchmark - Neon Noir on my card and the experience was smooth. As we know though, a bench does not make a game.

Regardless, that is neither here or there. 1. By doing that video on the 5700 it suggested that they would make it available for that card and 2. like Nvidia so should AMD release it to previous cards and let the owners decide, test, have a little fun with it, experiment with the visuals and might even be able to play Quake and Minecraft and with some other games on lower settings if nothing else.

I'm pretty sure RDNA 2 won't pull it off either and like the 2080Ti most people will turn the feature off for higher fps. Just and extra little gimmick to have some fun with as it will remain a gimmick for the next few generations anyhow.

meh, after 3 months on 2080ti I downgraded back to 1440p/120hz. so really, hopefully this is genuinely the actual beginning of the proper 4K revolution (4K120!) cuz they've been tossing this term around since Keplar launched. Still waiting for the true "no compromises" 4K gaming experience. (IE: crank the settings & go!)

I've been on 4k since 2014 with a 290x

That said, I have zero problems running the games I play at 4k ultra settings on my VII above 60fps at all times (yes, my go to is BFV).

A lot of games are fairly easy to pull 4k/60 and no I'm not talking esports nonsense. Now if you go in expecting every recent AAA title to do it, your in for a laugh. But I'd imagine with a 2080ti, one or two settings drop could easily hold 60fps min.

Side note:

Tried 120hz recently and I had to step away because I could feel & see a huge difference... had to stop playing because it was too tempting and I'm not ready for that investment yet.
