Quote:
Over the last decade, the industry has seen a boom in demand for GPUs for the data center. Driven in large part by rapid progress in neural networking, deep learning, and all things AI, GPUs have become a critical part of some data center workloads, and their role continues to grow with every year.

Unfortunately for AMD, they’️ve largely been bypassed in that boom. The big winner by far as been NVIDIA, who has gone on to make billions of dollars in the field. Which is not to say that AMD hasn’️t had some wins with their previous and current generation products, including the Radeon Instinct series, but their share of that market and its revenue has been a fraction of what NVIDIA has enjoyed.

AMD’️s fortunes are set to change very soon, however. We already know that AMD (as a supplier to Cray) has scored two big supercomputer wins with the United States – totaling over $1 billion for CPUs and GPUs – so there have been a lot of questions on just what AMD has been working on that has turned the heads of the US government. The answer, as AMD is revealing today, is their new dedicated GPU architecture for data center compute: CDNA.
Looks like that 8192 CU GPU will be using infinity fabric. Still hope they release a Titan competitor but it doesn't look like they will.

Well finally, it only took them decades to realize that they should make at least 2 separate designs for different use cases.

On servers... I think NV's software stronghold, monetary incentives, continuous strong performance are going to be hard to match for AMD who seriously struggles on the software front due to probably simply lack of investment as does their GPU hardware compared to CPUs also.
Only Intel could hope to challenge NV on servers right now I think and that's why so many people were "sold off" to Intel from AMD. It is better for everyone having Intel fight NV while AMD skips along the two and focuses on the market holes and specific designs such as consoles. AMD doesn't have the resources to fight any of the two on any front unless they want to ditch CPU or GPU altogether. That's my take on it.

Good for AMD, good for those who want more compute performance, bad for big Navi rumors. Or those of us looking for competition in the gaming segment to drive down GA102 prices.

This also might have caught Intel flat footed. I really want to see them break into the gpu market with enough success to keep going.

RDNA is not dependent on CDNA. And I'm not sure how RDNA would need CDNA in order to be competitive.

CDNA is still based off of GCN.

CDNA takes resources to make and AMD's are limited. Also some of the big gpu leaks may have been from CDNA, not RDNA. And third, AMD is only promising big efficiency improvements with RDNA2 and more than none clock speed increases and hardware ray tracing. Sounds like AMD's Turing launch.

I want big Navi to be competitive on the high end. I wouldn't buy one even if it were the same price/graphics perf, not with a quad core cpu at least, but I still want them to do well for all of the other reasons. I just think this announcement kind of tips the canoe on rumors that seem like they are based on conflation of the two arches.

I'm pretty sure they're going to continue to focus on improving their FP16 performance. Since they mention optimize for ML for CDNA. Vega 10 to Vega 20 was a massive increase but no where near their competition.
