Remember when RT came out and ppl mentioned they couldnt see a difference? I think a blind person can see RT with this demo. The slowness is there is there to emphasis the tech if it wasnt obvious. You want RT? Well, here you go.

maybe i'll get bored enough to install tomb raider so I can see what it looks like on a 2080ti @ 3440x1440p.

once we've transitioned, idc. the over-done phase will come and pass.

As for his comment about trying to hide the real fps, it very well could be. With THIS MUCH ray tracing, performance could very well be abysmal. Uploading a standard 24fps youtube video could be used as an excuse to not have to disclose the framerate in the demo.

I'm sure there's already standard nomenclature for making something more obvious by trying to hide it.

i was thinking ya all talking about the frame rates when it didn't even look 720p to me. then it occurred to me that the video in the OP is a recording of a recording.

viewing the source at 1080/60 (defaults much lower btw) seems much sharper/smoother:

or just nevermind

personally I do not see what all the hype around ray tracing is. I do not go to the city and see a bunch of stainless steel building everywhere, maybe a glass one. they usually tint them so they are not as shiny. the only real purpose I see for this type of GFX is for maybe a game that shows weather for raining or something. Just my opinion.

The real goal of raytracing is to replace shading altogether but for some reason reflections are the most showcased effect. Global illumination would be true dynamic lighting with correct ambient occlusion. When Metro Redux showcased RTX GI everyone said it didn't look good even though it's objectively correct. Game engines actually already use partial raytracing in order to do effects like dynamic lighting and screenspace reflections, the scope is just much more limited so it's more like a really sloppy approximation with cheating in between.

The problem with selling ray tracing is artists have gotten really good at faking it these last couple years. Side by side you can see the difference but if you aren't paying attention the old fakes still look pretty good at the right angles. The real advantage to ray tracing is how much easier it is to get it "right". A dev doesn't have to painstakingly craft a convincing fake, they just toggle a checkbox and boom, reflections!

Reflections are easier to spot, so they seem to have overdone it to make sure the message is sent across.

Tracing is much more than shiny reflections. Traced lighting in a scene is usually so much more realistic than whatever most games use that the look is unmistakable. It's the future of graphics because it's just better.

Exactly. Though the fake bakes can only look good if everything is absolutely static (and even then, gradients never look right).
