[IGN] HP, Valve, and Microsoft Are Building a 'Next-Gen' VR Headset

Quote:
PC manufacturer HP has announced that it is working on a new ‘next-gen’ VR headset, in collaboration with Valve and Microsoft.

The Reverb G2 is described as “the new standard in VR” by HP, and that it offers “a more immersive, comfortable and compatible experience than the previous generation.” That’s all the details that the website and newly-listed Steam store page reveals.

What we do know is that it is a follow up to the Reverb, HP’s expensive VR headset designed for Windows’ Mixed Reality lineup. That headset is best known for its very high-definition display, which measures 2160 x 2160 per eye. That’s significantly ahead of even Valve’s Index, which has a resolution of 1440x1600 per eye.

Quite what Microsoft and Valve’s contribution to the project is has not yet been made clear, but based on the original Reverb it may be that Windows Mixed Reality is a core design principle for the G2. Steam VR is a given - it’s on the Steam store, after all - but there’s no indication yet as to if the Index’s Knuckles controllers with be compatible with the G2.

Not a collaboration I would have ever predicted. With Valve and Microsoft working on VR together, this could be something truly exceptional.

Neat. I know HP has been diversifying for a while now since they got into 3d printers in 2013 or so. Should make for a nice product.

Could we be seeing a headset that works on both Steam and XBOX? The only reason a PS5 might be in my future is because of PSVR possibilities.

I'm really excited. Got into VR last year with a Rift S. Truly revolutionary, especially for an ole flight simmer like me. Was going to get a HP Reverb, but I guess I'll wait.

I'm completely sold on VR. It's truly remarkable.

VR needs 4K120hz Per Eye. That is my bare minimum acceptable display spec, and no I don't care if I have to mount the motherboard to my chair.
Seated VR experiences were the driving force behind VR development and they should still be the target audience.

Is this because you're so close to the display you notice pixellation and refresh rate more?

Is there any setup that can drive 2x displays at 4K 120Hz? Or is the image just doubled?

I've only done the android VR thing so I have no idea where the PC VR world is at.

Don't know if I agree with the 4k120hz part; 4k90hz seems a more realistic mark, but the second part I absolutely do.

It's not the shooters or beat sabers of the world. It's flight, racing and space sims where VR shines! Simulation in general is where VR can get the strongest foothold, IMHO. I can't even flight sim without it anymore.

VR would be great at 4K120 per eye, but it doesn't need it, that's like saying you need 4k 120hz to play pc games.

I have been enjoying the heck out of my oculus quest and it doesn't even have 90hz. I found out that I could use it on my PC a few weeks ago and it has brought new life to racing sims, I would love to play around with a high refresh rate headset (like valves) but it's not needed to enjoy it.

And yes, seated is all that matters.
