Of the 8 cores used in consoles two are dedicated to the console's OS (BSD or Windows), while the other six cores are available for games. Gaming PC's should definitely have 8C/16T now simply due to the longevity that these chips provide.
TL;DR: Quad cores are dead and buried, better upgrade to 8C and above.
