pc components in general are having a hard time with keeping stock for a bit now. PSU's, monitors, motherboards, cases. etc have had really bad stock for a few months now. im also getting pretty sick of what most likely is happening a lot of time. 3rd party sellers buy all the stock from newegg/amazon to gouge. Ive been trying to get the LG 27GL83A monitor for a while now but it sells out almost instantly and is only available from 3rd party sellers for close to double the price

Some of those are crazy prices to be sure, but that's what the market is right now for any AM4 motherboard. I'm kind of liking the ASRock B550 Phantom for $125.

No.2: To wait for the previous generation to sell out, because another reason the new one is more expensive is to make you buy the old one to clear stock without dropping the prices.

No.3: Adjust accordingly to how the company adjusted, if b550 does not follow b450 price points, don't prolong how long you're annoyed it's not similar (or are wishing it wasn't). The faster you reconcile the cognitive dissonance and switch from emotion to logic, the faster you can objectively search and compare and find what you need in the new generation that's comparable to the old.

No.4: Not to mention unforeseen consequences due to Covid-19, Trade War, etc, ...

To reiterate on No.3, Steve from hardware unboxed also mentioned it: take b450 Tomahawk best bang for buck ~$120, and find the nearest comparable motherboard which is MSI B550-A Pro ~$140.

Only a $20 difference and you get the following: An additional VRM phase, PCI-E 4.0 slot, an additional M.2 slot (of which one is PCI-E 4.0), 2x additional 4-pin fan headers, 1x internal USB3.2gen1 Type-C. To me that looks more than worth the extra $20

And don't forget once No.1 and No.2 kick in, it's gonna be even cheaper.
Good points, however the majority of people won't run an overclocked 3950 in a B450 board, thus the VRM's are pointless and most people don't run two nVME drives. A lot of these features are wasted on the average user.

@Liranan

I think both b450 tomahawk and b550-A PRO have just the right VRM and cooling for 3600-3900x, they're both best bang for buck.

I agree that if anyone is satisfied with b450 they should still buy one until they get out of stock. As for others who want new stuff and are worried about B450 bios support for 4000 series, the directly comparable b550 boards are not as expensive as everyone keeps saying it is, so that's a good buy as well.

The vast majority of people bought b450 Tomahawk whether they needed it or not, because reviewers, influencers and other people on the net expressed their opinions that it's best bang for buck and that everyone should buy it

I just started looking into AMD AM4 mobo's for an ITXish build I might want to do... I thought AMD mobo's were SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than intel...not anymore??? I looked a few years back and they definitely were....

They used to be cheaper, but now they don't have to rely on price to get sales. I'm hoping there will be some cheap 550 ITX boards by the time the new apu's come out.

The B550 boards compare to intels z490. So they are going to cost just as much. If you want cheaper look at b450. AMD deosn't have to create cheaper 500 series boards. When cpus are backwards compatible with 400 series and older. That is why B450 boards are still being made.

There was a rumer of A520 boards coming in september. Which would be closer to B450 prices. A520 might not have Pcie 4.0 so it can be made cheaper.

I'll be looking forward to asus B550 strix reviews. Maybe upgrade (sidegrade?) from B450 mortar max. Not a fan of MSI bios layout and I still need to confirm whether it's the realtek lan causing stutters everywhere during a download. If so, I'd very much would like an Intel lan.

I would like to see Nvidia start making Lan chips. They own mellanox so they have the expertise to do so. They could even put them in their gpus as gaming lan. And their shield console.
