Honestly 50%+ of Apple's revenue comes from the iPhone and not the macs like people think. The Mac device is really only a small portion of revenue for them, and they wouldn't be hugely hindered if they stopped selling them altogether at the current time. (Not that they would, mind you)
I assume they intend to give these future ARM based devices more memory then. I'm sure there will be some high end options, but anyone who is primarily concerned about performance wouldn't be using a mac anyway.

Macs are a small part of their sales but to apple diehards they give that sense of "one ecosystem" and allows people who hate windows to feel like they can completely avoid it.

Wow. If anyone can do a universal platform, it's Apple. They already control their "walled garden" very strictly, and everyone toes the line as expected when developing for it. Doing this won't be hard for them at all, and every developer will adapt. Instead of Universal Windows Platform, it's really just Universal Apple Platform that will exist. Being able to dump the whole iOS and Mac store into one store will make things very very easy for Apple going forward. I hope Apple has something strong for laptops and desktops that they can scale up from their iPhone chips.

Well, I really doubt that would be case unless Apple themselves are seriously interested in doing so. Though Apple's move can somehow influence the faster adoption of ARM on Windows we might see some ARM native titles in the future.

You can be certain they won't lower their prices, so, this will allow Apple to earn even more by offering lower power chips to people who only see Apple on their products. Thus, it's all about increasing profit margins and has nothing to do with performance or efficiency as the SOC in the latest consoles is extremely powerful and efficient.
