[Phoronix] Apple Confirms Their Future Desktops + Laptops Will Use In-House CPUs

Source: https://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n...-House-Silicon

Quote:
Apple finally confirmed the log-running rumor that their future laptops and desktop computers will be using in-house silicon with their custom designed Arm-based chips.

Before the end of the year, the first Mac with Apple silicon will ship while they envision a two year transition period until their entire product portfolio is Arm-based. Apple is motivated in part to use their in-house chips for better power efficiency and greater GPU performance than what is currently achieved via their Intel processors.

Eeeh... we'll see how that turn out. I'm not against Ax powered MacBook Air at all, but I need to see how stuff like bootcamp is going to work. I don't recall rosetta working well back then, although it's been a while, might not recall it clearly.
But then again, there's always a contingency.

They already ported over their old programs to native apps. Users have access to the iOS app store. MS Office port is almost complete along with Photoshop. That's plenty of ARM apps for a laptop like a MacBook. They even have more games than before to play.

Whatever. I need to see how well it will work, not what they have in the pipeline.
I don't want to have Windows as a laptop os because I can't afford to deal with it's shenanigans when it wets the bed again during an update. Linux, unfortunately, is just not an option yet. If this will work out, it'll be awesome. Otherwise, switcheroo to Dell.

I mean, not like an x86-64 based Mac really does anything useful that you can't do on an iPad with a keyboard and mouse these days. Since Macs already do so little, making them ARM based so they can dump the iOS app store onto them makes sense.

Please explain what can't be done on a Mac aside from having a variety of game titles?

Ouch.

Lots of people use photoshop + productivity apps that wouldn't run so well on a low memory tablet. So there's that.

Honestly 50%+ of Apple's revenue comes from the iPhone and not the macs like people think. The Mac device is really only a small portion of revenue for them, and they wouldn't be hugely hindered if they stopped selling them altogether at the current time. (Not that they would, mind you)

Good luck running flashrom from an iPad. On a Mac it's just a question of temporarily disabling csrutil to let the kext through and flash away.
