[anandtech]AMD Succeeds in its 25x20 Goal: Renoir Crosses the Line in 2020

Quote:
One of the stories bubbling away in the background of the industry is the AMD self-imposed ‘25x20’ goal. Starting with performance in 2014, AMD committed to itself, to customers, and to investors that it would achieve an overall 25x improvement in ‘Performance Efficiency’ by 2020, which is a function of raw performance and power consumption. At the time AMD was defining its Kaveri mobile product as the baseline for the challenge – admittedly a very low bar – however each year AMD has updated us on its progress. With this year being 2020, the question on my lips ever since the launch of Zen2 for mobile was if AMD had achieved its goal, and if so, by how much? The answer is yes, and by a lot.

Renoir 2020: New Silicon, Goal Achieved

The announcement today from AMD confirms the company has reached its goal of 25x performance efficiency by the end of 2020, starting from the Kaveri baseline. Here’s the important graph:

3x the performance efficiency in a year with basically the same arch with the same tdp is pretty good.
I wonder if it is true?

Edit: Maybe we will start to see some products in the 3-7w range to go fanless?

The 2 threads and single channel memory have me suspicious of it's responsiveness. Atoms go single channel and also slow down uncore stuff so bad that the dram has higher latency than optane dims. But it might be as fast as this 2015 Intel relic: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_M...0M%205Y71.html that I can confirm runs at ok speeds for light tablet style uses. And 2 threads might be enough, although I do see 4 used fairly often when I check. Hopefully we see that one in a tablet or Ultrabook with passive cooling.

But back to the thread, AMD not using processor TDP, but system power use as the denominator (when processor TDP has remained largely unchanged, I even had a Phenom2x4 p960 that ran with less power than these in a laptop a long time ago) makes me think that this is a misleading story.

You would think the power efficiency would be a processor based metric, not a mix of several other things.

They did double the cores though.

don't remember hearing that this was a goal in 2014, I'm assuming by "committed" they mean they set the goal after they hit it for a news article?

I'd like to get a Renoir for a pfSense Router/Firewall box. I'm thinking that the AES acceleration for my VPN connections will be through the roof all the while being delivered in a decent-enough power enveloppe. This is the Chip I'm most excited about as of late.

A Renoir might be pretty impressive in a box like this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...utm_source=EML

For sure. It would make it quite easy to build a CAD workstation that doesn't take up too much desk space.
