[Anand] The Samsung 870 QVO (1TB & 4TB) SSD Review

Quote:
A year and a half ago, Samsung introduced the first consumer SATA SSDs to use QLC NAND flash memory, squeezing an extra bit into each memory cell, yielding the 860 QVO to join the existing lineup of 860 EVO and PRO. Samsung's second-generation QLC NAND is now ready, and the 870 QVO is the first 870 model to be launched.

What the? Samsung trolling us once again with high priced mediocrity. Who on earth is going to buy these when TLC drives can be had for less?

The conclusion says it all:
Quote:
I can't really recommend the smaller two capacities of the 870 QVO given the plethora of alternatives. The larger models can almost win by default due to lack of competition, but it's hard to recommend them when so few consumers can justify buying so much SSD in the first place.
I agree that the 4TB drives have no competition but who is going to buy such low performing 4TB QLC SSD's when tradition HD's cost less and perform much better?

New thing bad. Me no like. Buy old one before gone!

Only kidding haha. Though to be fair this doesn't exactly scream performance. Or even good value really. Who are they marketing these drives to anyway?

These high-capacity SSDs are marketed toward people with space constraints who want SSD performance. I refuse to buy a QLC drive until the prices are considerably lower than TLC counterparts. I recently purchased a 4TB SSD to replace the two 500GB SSDs I have.

Samsung can get away with their pricing because of brand recognition and track record. Only enthusiasts will know other brands offer better value. The average consumer is going to walk into Best Buy and buy a Samsung SSD because they recognize the name.

It better have the cost of a hard drive of same capacity as it's performance is still quite similar to that.
QLC needs to offer competitive sizes at low price since so far it really can't do anything on the performance front even compared to already pretty slow/bad TLCs.

They should really have a fast HDD to compare to it. People seem to compare it to a HDD. But every hard drive iv seen was much slower. And yeah its not worth the price.
