If you don't have your Windows 7 disc handy—but want to create a custom installation, run Windows from a USB drive, or just do a fresh install—you'll need an ISO file of the disc. You used to be able to download them from Digital River's servers, but those links no longer work. Now, Microsoft has a Software Recovery Center where you can download those ISOs for free.

Hey you can now download Windows 7 off Microsoft's site! But there is a catch. You must have a valid license. I guess it is a step in the right direction for Microsoft.

apple makes money by selling hardware where as Microsoft doesn't sell hardware so they cant just give away there software for free

They took down the ISOs almost a year ago. The only you have been able to get for months is Windows 7 Ultimate. The others just re-direct to dead links.

This

OP you state it's a step in the right direction, it's actually a step back as you could download the ISOs from MS without a key before.

you can install any version of windows 7 from the ultimate ISO. you just have to edit the ISO and either: remove a text file to make it ask you upon installation; or edit the text file to choose which version to make the ISO thumb.gif

I bought a physical copy of Windows 7 after I got a copy of Windows 8 for $14 as part of a promo and decided I didn't like it taht much. Funny thing, I ended up downloading the ISO of Windows 7 from the Digital River website and putting it on a flash drive to install it before my physical copy came in the mail. I knew that I had a short trial before it got locked down, so I thought it was worth jumping the gun a bit and activating later.

I think I also downloaded a few different ISOs for friends when their OEM computers needed startup recovery. I never used those ISOs to reinstall to laptops because I never could figure out what the actual key code was, but startup recovery wasn't too picky.

I get what you mean and hypothetically "may have" done it myself.

But modifying the original ISO is against the law rolleyes.gif
