I'd take those days back any time, no complaints; more hardware competition back then, market was more diversified, more ways for an average user to go about his business; was it easier? No, definitely not. Cheaper? Hell no.

It's a law, it just takes logic rather than emotion to truly grasp what it entails: You can only downsize.
You'll never make people smarter, more focused, or more willing to work for their things. Even if the technological advancement ever allows for it you still won't do it as you'll be the one at a loss then; you'll have lost your own edge.
So the only way to further and further "homogenise" or "broaden" the audience? Is to take things a step down; or two.. Only way to go about it.
Be it in social, financial, political or even scientific matters, it doesn't matter. If the application, exactment or realisation thereof needs entail the 'many'? You gotta downsize.
