[CW]Microsoft yanks buggy Win10 1809 upgrade, leaving zapped files in its wake

Quote:
It took four days of complaints about deleted Documents, Photos and other files and late Friday, Microsoft finally pulled the Win10 1809 upgrade. Microsoft has known about the bug for months.

Starting late Friday night, Microsoft pulled the Windows 10 version 1809 upgrade package from various locations. The official Download Windows 10 page is on version 1803, ISOs have disappeared, and 1809 is no longer available via WSUS.

Odd. I haven't had any issue with it. In fact i was happy that it didn't reinstall all the bloat. Like previous versions did for me...

Glad they finally pulled it. I read about this on another site and made sure to back up my files last night. The amount of people who don't create backups on separate media is not surprising.

It's unclear what's going to happen on update tuesday. If it's a cumulative type update those with 1809 should be fine. However, if they re-release 1809 I would completely uninstall the old 1809 for the new 1809. At a guess any new updates for the new 1809 will probably not play nice with the old 1809.

Important one, as the source in the OP also mentions:

Neowin notes that this build skipped the Release Preview step, which was designed to catch such issues, but as we reported earlier there are indications a small percentage of Insiders were experiencing the file deleting issue for some months now, with the OS update going unfixed, suggesting something more fundamental is amiss with the testing system.

I think we all know what's amiss.

This is a serious problem with them. They are vehemently ignoring feedback.

This is why I do testing before getting comfortable with releases. I am actually testing this on a machine at work prior to deployment for this exact reason. It is an extra step but pays dividends in the end.

That testing you're doing only 'works' in this case if your test scenario includes a computer with files in the user folders (previously backed up) and not a fresh install on an empty disk.
