Man, these 3D Mark benchmarks are such a tease. They always have awesome scenarios that draw you in and just as **** hits the fan the benchmark ends

With nVidias drivers I wouldn't be surprised the bench will be a hot mess given the newness to the tech. Not saying that it will be since I am not clairvoyant, just that I wouldn't be surprised.

Path tracing is inefficient compared to Ray Tracing. This is just a DxR(Hybrid Ray Tracing) benchmark. We won't see fully Ray Traced game until video card compute power triples. Even than hybrid ray tracing still looks better than just a standard game.

https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/dir...tx-raytracing/

Quote:
DXR will initially be used to supplement current rendering techniques such as screen space reflections, for example, to fill in data from geometry that’s either occluded or off-screen. This will lead to a material increase in visual quality for these effects in the near future. Over the next several years, however, we expect an increase in utilization of DXR for techniques that are simply impractical for rasterization, such as true global illumination. Eventually, raytracing may completely replace rasterization as the standard algorithm for rendering 3D scenes. That said, until everyone has a light-field display on their desk, rasterization will continue to be an excellent match for the common case of rendering content to a flat grid of square pixels, supplemented by raytracing for true 3D effects.

So here's my question. Seeing just how brutal port royal is on my card versus bf5 on ultra will Ray trace maxed, am I to believe that they severely neutered the Ray tracing in the game from what it could be, to hit performance numbers? Just basically like shifting the scales downward and still calling "ultra" ultra? That's a hunch of mine.

Benchmarks are designed to crank all the latest features to the highest. If you notice pretty much everything in the Port Royal benchmark reflects.

I don't see any visual changes:

My favorite DxR preview so far:

Yes, Ray Tracing in BF5 is not even close to what they showcased in the tech demo with BF5. Only a few very minor surfaces are ray traced. You can look up the video where they show testing of what is and is not ray traced, and since that video was made DICE has further reduced the ray tracing that was used even at launch to get better performance.
