[Anand] [Update 3] Maxon Releases Cinebench R20 Benchmark

Quote:
One of the key benchmarks that have been used in the industry is Cinebench. The latest version has been Cinebench R15, released for version 15 of Cinema 4D. In recent years it has slowly become less relevant, as Maxon has moved through to version 19 and 20 of the software. To match the latest version of the software, the company has now launched the Cinebench R20 benchmark.

The benchmark is already available from the Maxon website, working through the Windows Store or the Apple App Store on Macs. It does not look like there is a separate standalone download.

.

Bold for emphasis. There isn't, indeed.

I get them dropping the GPU test as it was not the core focus of the benchmark for most, but making it only available for download through walled garden stores? Now you have to sign-in to your Microsoft account (or create one if you don't have one) in order to download it and it's limited to installs on 10 devices on the account, so another DRM-type deterrent to use it as a proper benchmark across systems. Bafflingly, taking into consideration the above, Maxon's website says that R20 supports Windows 7 and up.

As an aside, the rendered scene is not iconic as the one from R15 and before. Overall, I guess that they don't want people to use this. The 10 limit install is going to throw havoc onto reviewers' routines, just like Origin and other game services do with game benchmarks across different system configurations. But this is a free benchmark we're talking about, this was completely unneeded.

Maybe we should just keep using CINEBENCH R15 EXTREME - Unofficial MOD. And I wouldn't be surprised if this R20 release was a rushed response to the mod.

Update: TechPowerUp did the good work that Maxon should have thought of:

Just download, extract and run, it's fully portable. We've also included the missing Visual C runtime dependency and the manual.
Good stuff.

Update 2:

Maxon is pressuring enthusiast sites like Guru3D and TechPowerUp to remove the non UWP download, and by insisting on this just proved beyond doubt that they are out of touch and don't know what they are doing. Cinebench R15 + Mod it is then, if not dropping Cinebench altogether isn't actually the best course of action.

Quote:
Several reputable PC enthusiast websites such as Guru3D and us, were bombarded by comments from their readers that they didn't like having to get their Cinebench R20 copy from "walled garden DRM platforms," and instead preferred portable versions of the software.
Quote:
No record-seeking PC enthusiast with an LN2 bench painstakingly set up has time to plug their machine to the Internet, launch the UWP store, evade attempts to get them to log in with a Microsoft account, and fetch Cinebench R20 with versions they have no control over. They'd rather install and run their benchmarks and tools off a flash drive, with control over versions, and the ability to keep their machines offline to stabilize their overclock. Many others simply hate DRM platforms for freeware.
And also people who want to bench Windows 7 and 8.1 systems now only have a walled garden UWP download option that is locked to Windows 10, despite Maxon's own R20 supported systems list saying that it works with "Windows 7 SP1 64-bit or higher".

W1zzard (TPU's Editor in Chief and maker of GPU-Z) is seriously considering just keep using R15 in their benchmarks.

Update 3:

Maxon has finally made standalone versions for both Windows and MacOS available directly from their site.

Cinebench R20 uses a much larger and more complex test scene than R15, requiring about 8x the computational power needed to render it. The test also requires about 4x the memory. Therefore, R15 and R20 results cannot be compared.

*Cinebench R20 provides improved benchmark accuracy for current and next-generation CPUs to test if a machine runs stable on a high-CPU load, if the cooling solution of a desktop or notebook is sufficient for longer-running tasks to deliver the full potential of the CPU, and if a machine is able to handle demanding real-life 3D tasks.
They finally figured this out :-).
I don't like the MS store limit also- but arent this makes it more protected from editing the files? CB_R15 i found to be very easy to cheat.

Can you upload it then? Or would that be some kind of piracy?

Edit: Downloaded it! Asked me if I wanted to sign in to MS. I said no and it just downloaded it.
