[TheVerge]Valve is turning Steam Link into a personal cloud service that streams games anywhere

Quote:
Valve has announced that it’s expanding its Steam Link game-streaming feature in a big way with Steam Link Anywhere, a new service that will allow you to stream your Steam games from your computer to anywhere in the world through Steam Link hardware or the Steam Link app.

It’s a big change from the current Steam Link app, which used to only let users stream games within their own homes. This new expansion makes Steam Link a far more powerful feature — combined with the Android app (sadly, the iOS app is still being blocked by Apple), Steam Link Anywhere in theory will let users stream games from their PC to play anywhere they have internet service.

We knew some game streaming option was coming.

So does this require a pocket knife and some tweezers?

I'm very interested in this. Not sure something like this is going to work out though. Its been my experience with streaming games that as soon as you want to get down on something you have to deal with some kind of issue. I'd picture this is going to be amplified when you can't physically get to your pc. Will be keeping an eye on it no doubt.

i just said earlier today that console & streaming services are going to merge. This is just the first step. NV Shield already does an amazing job at this, the only shortcoming is not being able to access it from anywhere (that I know of)

soon, they'll just be blasting the games from their servers to the steam boxes, so you have delivered content, & local content.

once MS sees this as viable, they'll use their massive infrastructure to blast games to their consoles as well.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.
If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.

What I fear is the slow but sure disappearance of physical media, will we now see the slow, but sure disappearance of downloading a full game? You'll only be able to stream them from their servers and if your internet is out for whatever reason, no joy!

Grant it, I'm looking way down the road, but still.

I've wanted to use steam link to stream games over the net since I first tested steam link. I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people that would love to be able to play their pc games while away.

*Wouldn't it be cool if you could have a game installed on your main pc and a weak laptop. You could then play the game on your weak laptop but use some of the power of your gaming pc to help the process. Kind of like MS was talking about doing with the cloud and xbone. Would be interesting to see some kind of hybrid streaming where you can sure up a weak system over the net with your more powerful gaming rig.

As long as collectors exist, there will be local copies.

Like music streaming for example. Its the biggest share of profit, but physical copy ownership only increased since it became a popular way to consume music.

I know lots of PC gamers and exactly zero that would ever use this. But oh right, it's Valve I forgot so people are going to praise it even though it's pretty niche and just one of a dozen streaming services coming out soon, except this one requires you to host everything yourself.

I'm sure a few people here and there will get a lot of usage out of this but every time Valve does something like this, I mostly see it as just another thing they are toying with instead of continuing any of their good IPs.

Unlike you, I know people, outside of the intarwebz, who own the Steam Link and would use this feature because it's basically a free upgrade. The units are already in the hands of consumers (and a lot of them got them very cheap - like €2 or €3); it's almost no cost at all to Valve to provide surprise functionality to an already VERY high value product.

You obviously don't care for it, but try to take a step back and observe your written reaction to such a benign effort from a company.
