A quick glance of the title led me to think for a moment that we were getting a standalone non-GUI version of Windows; now I am disappointed
We already have the powershell and cmd window... what do we need another one for? It looks interesting, but I would like to see something that runs on its own... perhaps free?
I'm ok with features, but emoji? Come on. And directx text render?
I don't think they went out of their way to support emoji. Emoji are just Unicode characters (or character sequences), and better out-of-the-box support for Unicode necessarily means better support for emoji. As for DirectX rendering: You get way better performance (the GDI renderer is horrendously slow) and vastly more flexibility with how and what you render. I imagine people will initially use that flexibility for gimmicks (see here and here and here), but I also think that it will be more accommodating to accessibility requirements as well.
