[Phoronix] Valve Will Not Be Officially Supporting Ubuntu 19.10+

Quote:
The planned dropping of 32-bit support on Ubuntu saga continues... Well known Valve Linux developer Pierre-Loup Griffais has said they plan to officially stop supporting Ubuntu for Steam on Linux.

I couldn't believe it when I read that Ubuntu was planning to remove 32-bit support to the extent that I read that they were merely dropping the 32-bit version of the OS, but no, they want to actually remove the 32-bit packages that allow people to run 32-bit applications on a 64-bit OS.

What on earth are they thinking?

Of course it didn't go well when they actually tested the scenario: [Phoronix] Canonical Developer Tries Running GOG Games On 64-Bit-Only Ubuntu 19.10 Setup

I think it is a good move to drop 32bit. However it is a bold move to not maintaining 32bit backwards compatibility. But valve should have switched to 64bit a long time ago.

Ubuntu is a frigging Debian derivate and even more laughable is the fact that Mint is an Ubuntu derivative. Long gone are the times when the difficulties of installing a Debian distro made Ubuntu a necessity and Mint fixing the shortcomings of Ubuntu. The more you go down the chain the more convoluted everything gets.

Support Debian and let everyone else figure it out themselves.

I keep reading that part about how Valve should have switched to 64-bit a long time ago, sure, they can release a 64-bit build of their client, but what good does it do to the problem at hand? The older 32-bit games that they sell on their store are not going to magically turn into 64-bit builds with that move.

Are they also going to remove macOS support considering macOS Catalina is also 64-bit only?

They are not removing 32bit libraries. They (the libraries) won't receive updates, which will still cause problems as modern 32bit software no longer works with your system's outdated 32bit libraries (and I ask why would modern software be 32bit in this day and age).
On a modern desktop computing sense this does not bother me. However, I do run some older games that are 32bit or older. Printer drivers are a concern, so hopefully a solution is found.

Apple also announced they are dropping 32 bit apps with Catalina. On High Sierra and Mojave you'll notice a pop up that says "not optimized for your Mac" when opening 32 bit apps. Which also triggers the question are they going to drop support for Catalina?
