[PCGamer] AMD's latest drivers drop performance by 10% or more in some games

Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/amds-latest-...in-some-games/

Quote:
Earlier this week, AMD launched its new Radeon RX 5700 XT and Radeon RX 5700. While the cards in general perform well enough, there were enough oddities that we delayed our initial reviews a few days. After further investigation, it appears AMD shot itself in the foot a bit with its latest drivers. I'm going to look at the Radeon RX 590 specifically for this piece, mostly because I needed to use an existing card and I wanted to confirm some of the performance numbers.

Let me give a bit of background information to get everyone up to speed. The RX 5700 cards—both models—performed about as expected in most cases, but minimum framerates in several games were quite poor. With the official launch now complete, and public 19.7.1 drivers for all of AMD's currently supported GPUs, I decided to do some restesting. On the RX 5700 XT, the public 19.7.1 drivers perform basically the same as the pre-launch (also numbered 19.7.1, but an earlier version) drivers we used. But with an older card, I could test older drivers, so I grabbed the 19.5.2 drivers from AMD's site as a reference point.

AMD knows it can't get away with anything like this as it will get detected a la Nvidia. But glad PC gaming mags and youtubers keep them honest.

I'm sure AMD will release a statement saying it was an accident and they'll fix the problem.

In before the white knights with well it's a different architecture and we're going to see this type of degradation on GCN going forward. No, when I download a driver for my cards, AMD makes me chose from all these different categories all the way down to even R9 290. They better keep optimizing for all the cards and not just RDNA. Mind you they may be phasing out later GCN iterations soon enough and especially after the new consoles come out.

Having a hard time with the whole "you can expect 5-10% improvements". The losses are based on different archs. Why would that apply to Navi?

With how bad the drivers are right now after using one personally for the last few days, I wouldn't be surprised if some perf comes back. All I want is a stable driver AMD, how is that so hard..

They are using the performance degrade of the 590 as justification of an expected increase for the 5700. If they get newer drivers to remove the degradation of the 590 that won't mean a 5-10% increase for the 5700. I fully expect performance increases for both, but don't think one has much to do with the other. I think that AMD will have to work to make both work together into a newer release.

Interesting. I have actually gotten better performance in games such as Strange Brigade with my Vega 64. BUT! These drivers don't exist in a vacuum. A lesson I learned in Spring 2018 and had repeated in spring 2019 is that now everything has to be updated or there will be a performance degradation. It seems that whatever Macroshaft does has to be compensated for by everyone else.

This time around I updated everything including motherboard bios and power plan before it all came together. Just the 19.7.1 drivers alone did nothing. Heh. The chipset drivers had a positive impact on performance.

Interesting.
How come I am not noticing this? Do I have to play other games to get it by using a 590? LOL

Folks be mindful here. Anytime AMD is about to be competitive or beat Nvidia in performance we have gotten these "AMD Drivers suck circulations". It never fails (be it partly true or not at all).
This really tells me that BIG NAVI is beating a 2080ti as rumor suggests. Furthermore, AMD is rumored to be pushing ahead (sometime in 2019) with it's release, thus these "articles".

Except the article says the performance of the new cards is fine and unchanged with the new drivers. You're allowed to read past the headline, FYI.

Be mindful here? Looks like either you haven't read the article or are shilling yourself.
