[Phoronix] Google Engineers Get Windows Booting When Kexec'ed Under Linux

Source: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...-Windows-Linux

An interesting summer internship at Google has led to an experimental effort to get Microsoft Windows running via Kexec from Linux. The engineers involved have been implementing enough of the EFI Boot Services to be able to kexec Windows from Linux.

wait, so kexec is basically a parallel boot process, and not a VM?
this is probably the best kinda news i've heard of in a while.

Directly from magical magic place with a g:
Kexec is a system call that enables you to load and boot into another kernel from the currently running kernel. This is useful for kernel developers or other people who need to reboot very quickly without waiting for the whole BIOS boot process to finish.

They were running linux, then seemlessly were able to boot into the windows kernel. No reboot, no VM, just swapped.

If something like this was formally implemented, would it be the tool needed to basically have a Linux OS as the main OS but still be able to use Windows when needed for gaming purposes? I realize dual booting is an option, but it is far from seamless that way and when I tried doing that in the past I ended up just defaulting to Windows all the time because of the convenience.

If I'm being realistic it would probably be a headache to implement for day-to-day use and not have issues, but sounds cool in my head.

Do you ever bring any useful to the table?

On another note, if they can develop this, it would be great for users that could make use of this.
