[TPU] Microsoft Details DXR Tier 1.1, New DirectX 12 Features

Quote:
Microsoft detailed feature additions to the DirectX 12 3D graphics API, and an expansion of its DirectX Ray-tracing (DXR) API to Tier 1.1. The updated APIs will be included with the Windows 10 major update that's scheduled for the first half of 2020, although the features are accessible by developers in Windows Insider preview builds. DXR 1.1 is the first major update to the API since its Q4-2018 introduction, and introduces three major features. To begin with, it adds support for extra shaders to an existing ray-tracing PSO (pipeline-state object), increasing the efficiency of dynamic PSO additions. Next up, is ExecuteIndirect for Raytracing support, described by Microsoft as "enabling adaptive algorithms where the number of rays is decided on the GPU execution timeline." Lastly, the API introduces support for Inline Raytracing.

Yeah, this is pretty big news. My initial question would there be any benefits to already existing DX12 games using RT?

seems unlikely, unless they streamline the existing code with the 1.1 release.

MS is catering to nvidia implementation of RT through mesh sahder pipeline (among other tweaks).
This is simply a direct result of AMD's patent(s) regarding hybrid ray tracing, nothing more. MS is catering to both Nvidia and AMD regarding RT this go around.

Here is how I see it unfolding:
Next consoles come out, MS will use AMD's hybrid solution(s). Those consoles games will be ported to PC using powershell.
Nvidia will use DXR Tier 1.1 with games either not console exclusive or PC exclusive. But it will only work on Ampere cards. Turing card owners are going to get the shock of a lifetime when the 2080 ti won't be able to run those RT games right, LOL.

But that's a guess on my part

When it comes to Mesh Shaders Microsoft is only catching up to Vulkan and OpenGL, which have had them for a while now, for more than a year in fact:

It's going to be really interesting to know how they are rendering MS Flight Simulator 2020 though. Because I have to wonder what they've been doing all this time? Which brings me to this video:

Perhaps they went in a completely different direction. Because from my prospective I'm more interested in the end result of realism. I don't care how it's done. If RT wasn't used in FS 2020 consider me shocked!

Curious if DX implementation of Mesh Shaders makes use of AMD's Primitive Shader after two years of no support from AMD.

more like, turing cards can't run the new features implemented in 1.1 properly, akin to pascal running RT now
