not disagreeing, I block ads everywhere. Just playing devil's advocate.

This is hilarious, I won't ever stop using an adblocker, especially for overclock.net post vertical scope, Loading it up on my phone (The desktop version) And loading the EXACT same page with mace active (PIA VPN provides adblock via mace) and its about 10 second page load difference, And a 100% usability difference, Did you know that overclock.net has AUTO PLAYING VIDEO ADS and a string of ads every three posts? And a whole heap of crap at the bottom, All of it not verified and not from trusted sources, No.. I'm not turning it off, People have proven they can't be trusted AT all especially when it comes to making sure that there is no malware in their advertising.

Go further and put NoScript to work. It is unbelievable the amount of **** it blocks on this site alone.

i donate where I frequent, & block. internet ads haven't evolved beyond 1995, and its disgusting. nope. we see a lot of this at work, but not in chrome. Sites that'll only interact with Internet Explorer. Typically Govt/states/county stuff.

problem solved.

With the exception of certain sites at work that only function on IE, I haven't found any sites that block based on browser. But I use Firefox, which I would assume most sites are happy with due to its high market share. I don't even have IE on my personal computer, lol

As far as ad blocking, I use ublock origin. It does a much better job than Adblock Pro at getting rid of those "We've detected you're using an adblocker!!11!!11" messages. Necessary to check the weather

Honestly for sites like overclock.net it isn't anything hobbyists couldn't host themselves. Not every site needs to turn a profit.

I would argue that generally most sites that don't produce their own content would exist regardless of ad revenue, as would many of those that do produce content.

Production value might be slightly lower, but click bait also likely wouldn't be a thing. The problem is that certain industries, primarily journalism, might need to transition to subscriptions over ads.

A lot of sites are however rather greedy transitioning to subscriptions, they use ads as well as subs and then charge users thousands times more than their average revenue per user for the sole benefit of removing ads. If people are going to be expected to maintain numerous subs the pricing will likely need to adjust over time.

So am I verifiably hurting every company whose billboard I ignore driving down the highway?

I pay for internet access just like a website pays to host their website on the internet.

A website could implement a pay wall, accept donations, or pay for their own website with their own money instead of trying to operate at zero-cost by earning ad-revenue. To blame the consumer for not being interested in unwarranted ads is simply, stupid. Sometimes people like to stretch their opinions, but what's even worse is when they only believe their opinions and can't accept the actuality of what is required and what is optional.
