FreeSync is an AMD trademark, but the technology itself isn't exclusive to AMD. That is, if you buy a "FreeSync monitor" it should work on AMD or nVidia hardware (and Intel, maybe). It wasn't the case with Gsync which was exclusive to GeForce and required extra hardware on the monitor.

Now to what extent that is the case, or if there are special features or "extensions" exclusive to AMD, I am not aware of.

Again FreeSync is proprietary. Did you completely ignore what AMD stated in their FreeSync FAQ?

Quote:
AMD FreeSync™ technology is a unique AMD hardware/software solution that utilizes DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync protocols to enable user-facing benefits: smooth, tear-free, low-latency gameplay and video.
Here let Asus explain it: https://www.asus.com/support/FAQ/1009271/

Quote:
What is FreeSync / VESA Adaptive-Sync Technology?

• FreeSync technology is a dynamic refresh rate feature that is implemented through embedded and external HDMI, DisplayPort panels.

• The FreeSync technology in selected AMD GPUs resolves the communication issues between processor and monitor, eliminates image tears and choppiness for effortlessly smooth gameplay.

•ASUS FreeSync product is certified by both AMD and VESA standard, so it can be called as VESA Adaptive-Sync as well. Please note VESA Adaptive-Sync is specified in DisplayPort only.

So, do A-Sync monitors work with AMD cards? I am quite confused by all of this.

I do applaud AMD for Mantle/ Vulkan causing MS to make DX12 compete with it and make nVidia care about anything else other than DX11. When AMD didn't have the silicon, they're competing by opensourcing middleware and developing better APIs.

Imagine a world with nothing but closed sourced HairWorks™ and DX11 games using one CPU thread.
DX12 is Mantle/Vulkan. Look up the documentation and you will see that the reason AMD abandoned Mantle is because M$oft used it in DX12.

Not without FreeSync(On Windows).

They should. Variable refresh rate is two parts. The GPU controller (any GPU with freesync, g-sync, etc) and the monitor's controller. Any A-sync monitor will support the Adaptive Sync protocol should work with a GPU-side VRR technology that uses the Adaptive Sync protocol, so freesync should work. The original Adaptive Sync protocol was a part of eDP and I think it was used for the Panel Self Refresh feature to save power by stopping frame updates when the laptop determined it wasn't changing frames, but it was amended into DP1.2a iirc under the name "Adaptive Sync".

It's like USB input and output. To get full speed both the source and destination need to support the full USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 spec

Exactly. I doubt MS would have even made DX12 if mantle/vulkan didn't exist.

I dont know but why would they ever use it if they have game works? AMD is trying to do some desesperate move to keep TressFX relevant since no big studios have used it recently

Vulkan didnt release first than Directx 12, and Mantle mainly benefit AMD, right now Directx 12 could benefit those architecture like GCN (or better Like Turing)

We'll see more titles using it due to UE4 integration.

I think Mantle did. I don't remember hearing anything about DX12 and better threading until after Mantle was already out.

nVidia can make TressFX and other AMD tech run better on their cards since they're open source and nVidia can hack up their drivers to really accelerate those technologies. AMD doesn't lock out nVidia cards from running their tech like nVidia does with Hairworks and others.

That's an interesting way of saying that GameWorks hijacked TressFX in Tomb Raider.
