[TechSpot] Microsoft to shutdown Ad Monetization for UWP apps by June 1, 2020

Quote:
In a brief post, Microsoft announced that its Ad Monetization platform for UWP apps would be shutting down on June 1, 2020, since it is no longer viable for the company to "continue operating the product at the current levels."

Regarding its June deadline, Microsoft notes that "certain underperforming Ad networks will be shut down between now and June 1, 2020." and that developer payouts prior to this date will happen on schedule. It also recommends developers to "begin initiating a switch over immediately by evaluating alternate options for ad monetization."

Looks like another nail in the coffin for UWP. I don't think anyone here would miss it. I do miss my windows phone though..

I had to google to verify what environments supported the UWP and it is a bit of a loss, but cant be too bad. Excluding the Hololense, apps in that ecosystem are also being put onto other platforms like Playstation vs XBox, android vs windows vs apple or even Win32 vs UWP. For the hololens, i dont see much need for ads considering its really a commercial product and not really consumer.

This is a good thing.
Fake Windows needs to be abandoned.

Windows mobile lost support a couple of months before Windows 7 and will gradually become totally insecure like Xp. So even though my (retired but still working fine) Lumia Icon beats my daughter's iPhone 6s in screen, camera, speaker, headphone(easily powers my 250ohm dt990 pros), fluidity, speed, appearance and intuitiveness of the os, I will probably reset it and take my data off so it doesn't get hacked when I use it for streaming audio.

If only MS had made desktop W10 run on a phone in a default of tablet mode the apps would have been competitive. Fake windows took that away.

X86 has had adequate performance and low enough power consumption to be viable for this since the Haswell era Bay Trail in the Zenfone2. But that phone, and the T5c were set up to emulate arm to run android. Even with the arm emulation overhead they still performed in the upper mid performance bracket for arm. Running 86-64, with time spent on phone form os optimizations would have put them close to the flagships, but able to run all windows programs albeit much slower than a desktop.

Everything was so close to working, but fake Windows closed the door. Time to let fake Windows fall into the ash heap of history.

UWP is not going away (yet) just the ad ware stuff. They might need to fix their branding on it though. I really dont know what their goal with it is. If they focus around being cross platform, sure... but if its just trying to phase out Win32 that won't happen.

I know people hate UWP, but it could have been good. Windows needs to expand onto more than x86.

UWP is far from dead. Just MS being an ad network for it.

I would guess most mobile developers that used it to port games or apps to Windows 10/Xbox just used the same ad network they used on mobile.
You know, the ones that show the same 5 games over and over, but never show actual game-play .

General Google banner adds with no or minimal animation are not that bad. Easy to ignore. I assume they at least make developers some money. I personally can not stand full screen ads.

It did not pay MS to keep running an ad network if they did not make any money on it.

Unless you're running some OEM Windows 10 from a company called Xianovo or whatever with 90 different viruses inside a trailer park of a flyover, I don't think you're supposed to see what people typically consider an ad.

I have never seen any ads in Windows 10 itself. In games from the Windows store? Yes.

They do have options to allow some ads for programs and Windows spotlight as a lock screen has apparently shown video game or other ads.
I have never had any of these on and never saw any ads on Windows 10 itself.

Hi,
Once you kill suggested apps on start menu and on lock screen doubt you'd see many adds for anything.

Of course not using edge/... doesn't hurt either
Otherwise most adds depends on the apps used like web search via bing
I consider any popup message not stating security blocked a virus as annoying as an advertisement selling crap
