[TechRadar] Intel Clear Linux outperforms Windows 10 and Ubuntu… on cheap AMD hardware

Source: https://www.techradar.com/news/intel...p-amd-hardware

Quote:
Intel’s Clear Linux distribution looks like it could be the best operating system to run on cheap AMD hardware, with benchmarks showing it outperforms Windows 10 and Ubuntu on a $199 laptop with a budget AMD Ryzen 3200U processor.

The Phoronix website ran a series of benchmarks on a super-cheap AMD laptop from Walmart, and found that Intel Clear Linux beat popular Linux distros Fedora and Ubuntu for 78% of the tests.

Very interesting indeed. My main concern is that I do not know how much I trust Intel in this arena (as I type from Linux Mint) in regards to keeping it free for everybody. Wonder what they are planning on cooking up with this research and development?

I don't see any benchmarks done against windows. It looks like its just faster than other versions of linux if the benchmarks are anything to go off of. Where are they getting "faster than windows" from?

Please correct me if I'm wrong. The benchmark results seem quite extensive so I may have missed something.

While I'm sure linux fan boys will rave about this, all I see here is a different linux distro with an intel logo on it. I get the sense that the article is intentionally misleading or at least overly brief and not well presented.

Also, wow. Slow on OCN when a mention of linux doesn't spark more comments.

This little article is a cluster fook.

The only link I see in the article with "Cheap AMD hardware" running Linux beating Windows 10 is using Ubuntu not Clear Linux. https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...ws-linux&num=1 In 63 benchmarks Ubuntu won 63% of them.

Looks like this article left out that Ubuntu was 15% faster than Windows 10 on this laptop.

After they made that article they tested it using Clear Linux against Fedora and Ubuntu which Clear Linux won the majority of the test.

Interesting, though not a very scientific comparison since the article referencing windows and Ubuntu doesn't even say what version of windows 10 it's running.

It's Windows 10 Home. An earlier article stated that it's the out-of-the-box installation (which is how Michael usually tests things).

Yes I too can read. "Home" is not the version. Windows 10 has seen several major revisions and there's no way to know which one the laptop is running.

Neither the latest clear linux nor Linux mint cinnamon will stably run on this atom z8300 2g ram 32g emmc fanless of stick ( mele pcg02 plus) I have but windows runs just fine. Both the Linux distros steadily fill the ram up until there is no free ram up then the system freezes. Back before my daughter cracked the screen on her up stream7, that thing stably yet slowly ran windows 10 on 1 GB ram.

Weird that windows works with less.

I am a Gentoo user my self, and have been following many benchmarks on Linux for a while. When it comes to Linux vs Windows. Linux smashes Windows in everything but gaming hands down.

That includes data transfer, SQL Database querys, file indexing, response, I/O...... I can keep going..... The only thing Linux has yet to conquer on Windows is raw GPU power in gaming performance. With DXVK, Esync, Wine 5.0 and a properly configured kernel you might be seeing a %5-10 lag being Windows when gaming on fully compatible titles.
