[SlashGear] Microsoft Defender ATP anti-virus on iOS and Android soon, Linux preview now

Quote:
Today Microsoft Defender ATP for Linux was made available for public preview, and a version for iOS (for iPhone and iPad) and Android were announced. The Android and iOS versions of Microsoft Defender ATP will be released later this year. Today’s preview of the Linux version was first shown at Ignite 2019 running on Ubuntu.
Source: https://www.slashgear.com/microsoft-...-now-20610355/

There are a lot of articles about this, but this one had a headline that was the most on the nose. For those interested in more detail, here is the official blog post from Microsoft: https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/202...-environments/

Here is a quote directly from the Microsoft blog post:
Quote:
Microsoft Threat Protection, generally available today, does the heavy lifting for defenders by proactively hunting across users, email, applications and endpoints – including Mac and Linux. It brings together alerts and takes action using AI and automation. Microsoft Threat Protection breaks down security silos so security professionals can automatically detect, investigate and stop coordinated multi-point attacks. It weeds out the unimportant and amplifies signals that might have been missed, freeing defenders to work on the incidents that need their attention. With identity protection as a core component, it is the only solution of its type that is designed for Zero Trust. More details on the Microsoft Threat Protection announcement can be found on the Microsoft Security Blog.

It also builds upon solutions recognized as leaders in their categories, like Microsoft Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) for endpoint security. Microsoft Defender ATP offers preventive protection, post-breach detection and automated investigation and response for Windows and macOS. Today we’re announcing support for Linux and plans for iOS and Android as well.
This is definitely not a move I would have predicted. Makes sense when you think about it though, they probably already identify a lot of threats on other platforms so they might as well try and monetize that.

but does defender have any sort of central management?

ghuhuhuhuhuhuh this double type bug is driving me insane, and is somehow affecting ALL of my computers(work and personal). Only commonality is my google account.

While Defender is pretty much useless I am wondering whether this is yet another step towards Windows becoming a Linux distro.

Linux already has ClamAV, which is also available for Windows. Microsoft is bringing it's Windows 10 data mining to other OS's.

Suspect it's more to do with the US Government's need to monitor and copy all data from every user on Planet Earth.

Linux has to fall in line like with every other PC Operating System. Except those in Russia and China, which are completely safe from the US spy machine.

I'd assume you're kidding. Nothing is safe.

We should expect a surge of new viruses and malware for those platforms then
