I dunno about Epyc, but I've run an 1800X, 1950X, 2700X, 2990WX and 3900X on Linux for the last two years (staggered starting points, though) and had less issues with them than I've had with Intel systems running the exact same OS (Mint 19.x).
I don't disagree that AMD (and particularly Zen) have a handful of issues that should never have been issues, but the primary problems I've had have either been [censored] BIOS implementations from the manufacturer regarding low-power states (in the case of one system, because the others all worked fine), a kernel regression in two releases of 4.15.something and 5.0.something that broke PCI-E bus timings and caused PCI-E devices to randomly drop off the bus - which also happened on an Intel system, but nowhere near as often. My primary gripe about AMD Zen on Linux has been temperature monitoring (which was fixable by compiling a kernel module yourself, now fixed completely in more recent kernels (from 5.3 I think...? I can't remember exactly...) and the [censored] atrocious implementation of RAID where Linux drivers are now impossible to find, even on AMDs website because they subcontracted it out to a 3rd party or something stupid. When I was trying to get RAID working I read something about that but in the end gave up in disgust. On the system I tried it on, even Linux software RAID was flaky; it was about a 50/50 thing whether a reboot would require me rebuilding the RAID array regardless of whether Mint, CentOS, Gentoo or SuSE... fortunately the boot drive wasn't part of the RAID, but it was a PITA I just didn't need.
On balance, I've had just as many issues with Intel in the same timeframe - although mostly to do with their iGPU or motherboard issues that aren't really Intel's fault. Of course, anecdotal evidence, take with pinch of salt, I don't have multi-month uptimes either.
I want to get an Epyc system, hopefully soon, so I guess any Epyc specific craziness I can look forward to. Any hints on stuff to expect?
