[THE VERGE] Microsoft offers $100,000 to hack its custom Linux OS

Quote:
Microsoft is offering hackers up to $100,000 if they can break the security of the company’s custom Linux OS. The software giant built a compact and custom version of Linux last year for its Azure Sphere OS, which is designed to run on specialized chips for its Internet of Things (IoT) platform. The OS is purpose-built for this platform, ensuring basic services and apps run isolated in a sandbox for security purposes.

Microsoft now wants hackers to test the security of the Azure Sphere OS, paying up to $100,000 if the Pluton security subsystem or Secure World sandbox is breached. The bug bounty program is part of a three-month research challenge that runs from June 1st until August 31st. “We will award up to $100,000 bounty for specific scenarios in the Azure Sphere Security Research Challenge during the program period,” explains Sylvie Liu, a security program manager at Microsoft’s Security Response Center.

'up to'

These prize programs are a good way of getting cheap labor. Get 1,000 people spending 100k hours on this and they'll likely pay out less than 250k in bounties, basically 2.5$/hour of work.

No doubt. People are going to try to hack it either way though, so might as well try to get something out of it.

I bet it doesn't count to hack the hosting OS.

this is basically an essential part of the vetting process.

you know how we get games released in beta that quickly get patched?

this is similar.

"hey... giant group of people way better, and way worse than our QA staff... please do this, n most likely get peanuts for it. thanks!"

I know some of these guys do end up making fat checks thru this process. N honestly... if they're genuine savant tier hackers, currency is likely not an issue.

Maybe Intel is desperate to find a REAL - Elliot Alderson.

Also the security agencies would love to get a hold of someone in that category for sure because they, can contribute to their orchestrated mayhem.

Windows edging ever closer to becoming a proprietary Linux distro?

So, the only way Microsoft can have a secure OS is by using Linux.

I think this is definitely a case of becoming Linux. Windows is a mess and only used on desktops, the only way it can complete with Linux still is by becoming Linux.

What was it? "Embrace, extend, extinguish"?

Well, depending on point of view we're either at step 1 or step 2.
