Source: https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pa...soft-DX12-WSL2

Quote:
Part of this DirectX work for Linux involves a new "DXGKRNL" Linux kernel driver for exposing the DirectX graphics adapters to the Linux user-space through the WSL2 setup. The DXGKRNL driver interfaces with the Windows host via a VM bus connection. Multiple GPUs will be supported.

The more interesting work is in user-space with Microsoft to provide a "real and full D3D12 API" for Linux. "This is the real and full D3D12 API, no imitations, pretender or reimplementation here… this is the real deal. libd3d12.so is compiled from the same source code as d3d12.dll on Windows but for a Linux target."
Looks like Microsoft may be preparing to release a consumer Linux based OS. This is closed source so it doesn't benefit Wine.

Probably related to this: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/comma...ouncing-wsl-2/

I won't pretend to know exactly what "adding a linux kernel to windows" really means for the end user but I'm sure it will make things easier for people who want or need to use linux and windows.

I've said many times that linux will never be a real alternative to windows for PC gaming but I feel I should add... unless Microsoft is the one to get behind it.

eventually the rest of windows is going to go bye bye when you drop into a game that triggers Game Mode. only the needed bits will be left to run via the linux kernal.

Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.

Game mode doesnt even work man.

https://www.techspot.com/news/85137-...rformance.html

I was having performance issues in wildlands and I couldn't find any fix until I disabled game mode and suddenly everything was fine.

I'm curious to know what this will really mean for people who know more about linux than I do.

no one said game mode currently works. just that there are rumblings about future windows builds featuring a genuine game mode where all the not needed OS trash drops away after launching into a title. what could power that aside from switching over to a linux kernal while win10 basically sleeps?

I’m wondering if you can run WSL2 with CUDA to support Folding at Home and maybe eek out a little more performance. Thoughts?

IDK why you would jump to linux as the solution to a better game mode. Windows could trim out a lot of stuff to run in a cut down version of itself if they really wanted to go that route but I doubt it since game mode only really benefits low end CPUs and with everyone moving to next gen hardware I doubt if game more will really even matter at all.

More proof Windows will become Linux.

Unfortunately this won't benefit the Linux community as it's closed source and Windows won't change to the casual user.

Everytime there is a thread about windows, a bunch of linux people show up to talk about how great linux is but now that Microsoft is getting on bored, no one wants to talk about it? Strange.
