[Guru3d] UEFI scanner brings Microsoft Defender ATP protection to a new level

Quote:
Hardware and firmware-level attacks have continued to rise in recent years, as modern security solutions made persistence and detection evasion on the operating system more difficult. Attackers compromise the boot flow to achieve low-level malware behavior that’s hard to detect, posing a significant risk to an organization’s security posture.

Windows Defender System Guard helps defend against firmware attacks by providing guarantees for secure boot through hardware-backed security features like hypervisor-level attestation and Secure Launch, also known as Dynamic Root of Trust (DRTM), which are enabled by default in Secured-core PCs. The new UEFI scan engine in Microsoft Defender ATP expands on these protections by making firmware scanning broadly available.

Nothing about this news makes secure boot and more or less mandatory. You can still choose to turn it off it you want to.

Win Vista - 7 - 8 - 8.1 - Spy - XBox. The regression is going well. Next we'll have Win Lockdown, it knows everything about you so it will make all of your decisions for you and tell you what you want to do on your PC.

I refuse to use iOS and Google. Sadly I have to use Youtube, no other service has all the music and educational videos I like.

So will this new security feature be the doorway for a new exploit next year?

It will be revealed that this security feature was built in by the usual suspects as a vulnerability, akin to Intel's vulnerabilities and the many backdoors we know nothing about.

The tinfoil hat side of me has always felt that the security experts and the exploiters are the same people. Create an security system (leave a hole), create an exploit using the hole, get a contract to fix it.... (cue the Lion King scene with the circle of life playing in the background)

It's easy to become a victim of paranoia about things that we don't understand, and this security stuff is WAY over my head.
