If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.
Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.

Quote:Fallout: New Vegas would have been a better game if it was PC-only, according to the game’s lead world builder. Scott Everts says that the restrictions of the game engine brought about by the game’s console release forced his team to strip away a lot of their initial ideas.

In an interview with Everts, he told PCGamesN “[the game] would have been a lot different if it was PC only. We had a lot of plans early on. Like, ‘Here’s where the water is stored, here’s where the farms are, here’s where the government is centralised’. We had it all planned out - it wasn’t just a bunch of random stuff.”
That was a different time in gaming history. We're pretty much "over the hill" for system memory requirements in games. PS3 to PS4 was the last time we'll ever see an exponential expansion in memory, games just don't get big enough to need 64GB system RAM, I can't imagine anyone claiming the average memory capacity we have now is crippling any game design.
Modern developers can only blame their own creativity, and in terms of CPU, as soon as PS5 hits with 8C/16T it's going to turn about 70% of gaming PCs obsolete (judging by Steam Hardware Survey only about 30% of people have 6 Cores or more, which is what you'll need to keep up with the new consoles), and we can't even be sure how well PC CPU power is going to progress over the next decade.
I have no doubt that PS5 will still be competent compared to a mid-range PC in 2025, at which point no doubt Sony will be launching PS5 Pro.

I don't think "it's going to turn about 70% of gaming PCs obsolete" for a while because games developers rarely develop all their games (even AAA titles) to only work on next-gen hardware -- there's still a large installed base of PS4 Pros and Xbox Ones out there to make sales to.

I don't think consoles ever really push the CPU or GPU performance envelopes because they have restrictive thermal and power limits they have to deal with.

Yeah steam hardware survey... That's not saying much. It optional and a fairly high percentage aren't gaming PC's. Its much more sensible to look at the specs of the average gaming pc for the last few years.

6 Cores has been the standard for even the lower mid-range gaming PC's for the past 3 years. I don't think those that are still running a quad core or less are the people that still expect top level performance with upcoming AAA games.

For a very long time consoles were at the forefront of game development, both technologically and in game design. To minimize that history with these sorts of statements just because you don't like the fact that a modern console is nothing more than a cheap HTPC is deeply misguided.

"For a very long time"? Huh? The PS2 AND Xbox weren't anywhere near as powerful as PC's when they were first sold, ditto for Xbox 360 and PS3, ditto for XBone and PS4. The games were designed w/the limitations of console hardware, which wasn't state-of-the-art.

The XBone is running at < 2.3 GHz and it's IPC is pitiful. The memory footprint for all consoles were always limited (for both CPU and GPU).

STALKER was a game designed specifically for the PC and it showed: vast draw distances, huge maps, advanced AI, tesselation -- none of the consoles could've handled these features at the time.
The heady days of STALKER. I mean, Half-life 2 brought me to the PC gaming table, but STALKER made me a PC gamer. To this day, probably my favorite gaming experience of ALL TIME.

The JEEP club O||||O

The Web puts all of the world's knowledge at our fingertips; unfortunately it's mixed up with all of the world's crap.
