Feel free to correct me. I'm right just as often as I am wrong. Or wrong as equally as I am right at least. I dunno I could be wrong about that..

And that's news that consoles are slower than most PCs for many decades? They were so bad they are practically low end PCs nowadays with a brand sticker on it.

Consoles always held back games and will continue to do so.

That's is, bluntly, an outright lie.

For a very long time consoles were at the forefront of game development, both technologically and in game design. To minimize that history with these sorts of statements just because you don't like the fact that a modern console is nothing more than a cheap HTPC is deeply misguided.

Depends on what time period we're talking about here. I wouldn't call that an "outright lie". In fact, cross platform games have always been held back from the fact each platform was its own thing and not simply a PC, but you can argue platform exclusive titles were ahead of PC for a while.

Of course consoles hold back what a multi platform game can be due to their ever diminishing performance compared to PC. Although the thing nobody ever thinks about is the fact that we would not have such grandiose games jammed with tons of content without consoles. The consoles even though as of this gen truly becoming under powered gaming PCs do bring a huge amount of consumers to the gaming market. Without those extra consumers & the money they spend on gaming we would not have games on the level that we do today. At the end of the day the gaming industry is a just that, an industry that needs to keep being profitable to survive, expand, & improve. Without the money that console gamers bring into the industry we would be far behind on a technical scale where we are today with games. So I posit that consoles actually do more to push gaming as whole forward than they do to hold it back in the big picture. If gaming would've never left the PC we would be looking at a far different much less advanced version of video games & gaming right now IMHO.

That's a good point, you can't force most people to use a PC for gaming, so without the consoles gaming never would have really been a big thing, & the quality of PC titles would probably have been less. PC games now have to at least be a bit more convenient & bug free to compete with consoles.

I think the newer consoles help PC games as well since the APIs are starting to be similar, the hardware is pretty similar in architecture now as well. So all the work that goes into optimizing a title for lower end "console" hardware seems to be scaling better these days to PC with much better hardware. Look at Destiny 2 for example, it runs amazing on a 1080 Ti, maximizing utilization, while still scaling down to consoles quite well.

Interesting read.

Also; I admit to giving Bethesda a pass on their "buggy releases." Games this open are inherently difficult to do and for a while, they were pretty much the only dev making games as open as they are. Sandboxes with huge modding potential with the tools provided is a pretty cool thing that a lot of devs won't do anymore.

What I find interesting about consoles, in my sphere of influence/knowledge, is that a lot of teens now are PC gamers only. My son and his friends don't even bother with consoles anymore. The more friends of his I meet, the more I find this to be true.

Can't draw too much about it, except to say that his circle of friends and acquaintances are hardcore PC gamers and could care less about consoles. They play on the phones out and about and on their PCs at home.

If this is a trend, PC gaming can really be on the rise (more so than now) here in the near future.

Not really their fault tbh. They had to use Bethesda's Gamebryo engine, which is a mess. Most of the technical bugs in Fallout:NV were bugs that were also present in Fallout 3 (I know I managed to have the same ones lol), which btw had even more problems on release than NV. I think a couple of these even made it to Skyrim. Fallout 4 still uses an updated Gamebryo so there's another load of problems there (some of them are only fixed with mods).

Eurogamer paid a visit to Obsidian HQ some weeks ago and did a series of articles on all of their games. Here's an excerpt about Fallout:New Vegas having 3 different playable races:
Quote:
"Originally we had this idea where the player would be able to choose between three races: human, ghoul and super mutant," he said. "It was just the engine...

"It really had to do with how all the weapons and armour worked. Trying to have them all work with ghouls and super mutants was just going to be - [Bethesda] felt like it was going to be a nightmare. It wasn't like they said no but it was a very strongly worded, 'We would really suggest that you not try to do that.'"

Source: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-09-12-fallout-new-vegas-was-once-fallout-sin-city-and-had-three-playable-races

Also reminder that due to the engine being wonky, they couldn't make "vehicles", so the metro train in FO3 was a guy with a train wagon as a head that just ran pretty fast and you couldn't see the body since it was below ground.

Gamebryo sucks.

This isn't surprisingly new, we can say that to about any console game, making it on pc gives more options, they can push mechanics-features, physics etc much further.
The problem are these big teams, most of them own by publishers just wanting to concentrate on consoles, because the money is there.
