Everyone here is only talking about whether they want the game single or multi player.

I think its a sure thing its multiplayer, they said as much, so it will be.

The more concerning things I think are:

As this is coming from a single player franchise/game developer:
Will it have voice chat? Text Chat? Will it be proximity based voice chat?
Partying mechanics? Will it use the bethesda launcher? If so are they adding a friend system to that? Or is it going to use some other method?
They said the beta is going to be on xbox one first, does that mean perhaps its integrated with windows store and thus xbox party system? I hope not.

Will the networking be completely server based? Meaning are they going to adopt a pure dedicated server networking model or are they going to go more like what bungie does with destiny and use a hybrid peer-peer-server model?

What happens to bullets/objects after player death? If I lob a grenade and die and respawn before it exploded does it still explode?

Its these kinds of questions I would like interviewers to ask.

Still with dedicated servers, there would be the potential for them to eventually shut down a fully online game isn't there? Or am I misunderstanding?

You understand it correct. We will be at the mercy of Bethesda's definition of "years to come" when discussing the dedicated server support.

Just a reminder that there is still a huge community of people playing and making mods for FO3...I hope they are prepared for a long run.

they confirmed private servers so you or the community could host their own if the official servers closed.

It hasn't been confirmed. It's been loosely mentioned in an interview as something Todd would like to implement in the future.

I do expect them to release private servers. Eventually they want to be able to sell the game without having to prop up servers, right? However, the Creation Club (Bethesda pay mods) will be in direct financial conflict with privatizing servers, so I dont expect we will see private servers until several years from now, when it makes sense for them to start shutting down some of their own servers.

2. Online only means they have greater control over piracy and their IP.

3. Stricter control over modifications. We don't like adult mods even though their controversial nature is free publicity (worked GREAT for Skyrim...sex sells. Always does. Fact.) The risk of a Hot Coffee/Rockstar incident is too great and could damage our rep. (I guarantee this has been discussed at length at many meetings behind closed doors)

4. Easier to implement a microtransaction system. Easy profit.

All in all, the move is an obvious one. But so damaging to the end consumer/gamer in more ways then one. (Really, TES:Online should've clued them up on what their fanbase wants...)

Bethesda titles have been associated with good, single player, personal experiences, of which is an eroding privilege in todays always online society. It's very difficult to have such a tailor made (via mods) immersive experience among a ocean of online players who by default, will treat it superficially and use it as a platform to troll and harass.

An online game is just a game. A single player game is an experience.

All the more reason why, when Bethesda released Skyrim and Fallout 4, they were roaring successes further catapulted by an unregulated, open and free marketplace of seemingly endless modifications and improvements. Sadly though all good things come to an end and what i believe we have here is a conflict of interest between the needs of a company, and the needs of the fanbase/gamer.
An ugly and cogent analysis, I thought I'd really like Fallout 4 but it turned out meh and now this...

FO76 is not for core fans. Howard himself says the game is an experiment. I love the idea myself, (not having NPC's is unfortunate). For those wanting that true Bethes game, remember FO76 help funds TES6, which does not have a release date. I'm interested to see how further the engine is tweaked though. Better lighting and texturing sounds amazing. The current engine does feel a little janky at times.

It will be interesting to see how bad they botch this.

If they don't, I know a lot of people will be down to play, I would be one of them - even though it is eons away from the original two Fallout.

It's a video game as a service, of course its going to bomb. It will be primarily funded by MT/Lootboxs and other garbage meaning only whales will stick around. Most games that feature pvp with building/housing elements tend to have low populations because of griefers. Most people don't want to play a game where all their work can be undone by a bunch of whales and no-lifers.

Also there wont be any community mods for the game. With FO4 we already saw paid mods (aka stolen mods from nexus) in a sad attempt to get more money, which turned out to be a test for whats coming for 76.

We've seen this type of stuff before in open world games and it always ends up being a collasal failure.

I didn't hear anything about character progression. How is that going to work?
