If the initial offer had been seven figures versus profit percentages, I'd give him credit for having faced a difficult decision and choosing poorly. In this case, he's just an idiot. A low five figures versus share of the pie, you always take the share whether it's a video game or a romance novel series with a Kindle deal. Even a relative failure of a game, so long as it was actually published, would net you at least the few grand he took home.

Farewel happy Fields; Where Joy for ever dwells; Hail horrours, hail; Infernal world, and thou profoundest Hell; Receive thy new Possessor; One who brings; A mind not to be chang'd by Place or Time; The mind is its own place, and in it self; Can make a Heav'n of Hell, a Hell of Heav'n.

So it appears that the book author made a bad business decision and now wants money anyway even though he specifically passed on the opportunity. His reasoning is stated that *supposedly* he only sold the rights for 1 game, therefore CD Projekt has been illegally selling all subsequent games and DLC, and he demands to be paid for these other games and expanded content. Now the problem with this is that The Witcher 2 was released in 2011. It sold over 8 million copies and made both a ton of money and greatly increased awareness of the series worldwide. If this author truly thought that he had only sold the rights for 1 game, then the issue should have and would have been raised way back then. There is no way he missed that fact that the 2nd game was released, supposedly without the rights to have done so. Now we have had DLC for TW2, TW3 came out and has sold over 33 million units, as well as DLC for TW3. This buzz about the games has even prompted Netflix to purchase rights to make a series on it. It seems like this was the turning point in the authors thinking. He suddenly realized that his prior statements that he never even believed in his own creation having any potential, actually did, and now was raking in hundreds of millions of Dollars. Once he got a taste of what had to be at least a million Dollars from Netflix, he now wants even more money for himself so he is going back on a deal he made over 11 years ago. If anything, the author of this series owes payment to CD Projekt for creating this deal with Netflix in the first place.

Netflix pays big for almost everything. Its probably the smartest thing he's done since Hollywood isn't interested.

He must have fallen behind on his loan repayments or be in severely in debt lol. The game of life is rigged from the start but most people aren't aware of this.

Why does this make me think of that guy in Seattle who sold Windows to Bill Gates for $50,000?

Didn't he only sell because he thought the game would be a flop anyway and he was making money on the books?

Also hasn't he tried to get more money in the past and it hasn't worked at all?

Either way everything I've heard about the guy is he's a douche, he made the deal with CDPR, deals a deal and that's the end of it.

Edit, this reminds me of the movie studios letting George Lucas keep the rights to Star Wars. Didn't they also do that because they thought the movies would flop...

Maybe CDPR should turn it around and ask him for money instead.
Books were super-popular within Poland in the 90's. In other parts of Europe it was sort of known but not exactly popular later in the 2000's thanks to fan translations.
He did indeed benefit A LOT from the games already. Books got known worldwide.

On a stretch I think it's safe to say that he even got this Netflix show thanks to the Witcher games.

He was not part of the development at all. He thought they'll simply fail, asked for 7000£ and went on his way. He's never played the games and publically said that he never will. Honestly in all his interviews it seems pretty clear that he hates video games and do feel salty towards cdpr.

Now heres few important things to think about
• His "request" feels more like a threat.
• His books benefitted from the games, safe to say he even got the netflix series thanks to the games. CDPR benefitted from his IP, he benefitted from CDPR's games.
• He says the contract was only for the first game - BS, if that were so he should've said something years ago when Witcher 2 came out. This is probably just his lawyers trying to find a loophole in the contract depending on what exactly was stated. If contract was in Polish then singular and plural is different to distinguish unless specifically stated.
• Law should exist to protect the rights of it's citizens, not to fix their bad business decisions. Author is simply trying to get a piece of that pie he missed due to his bad business decision.

Honestly, CDPR should not give this man anything.

In his delusional mind the books made the witcher games popular worldwide. Tons of articles on it.

https://www.vg247.com/2017/04/19/the...totally-wrong/

https://gamerant.com/witcher-author-...-game-popular/

I don't know about you guys but I only know about the witcher because of the games. Personally think they're overrated but that's beyond the point.
