Is this Star Citizens' version of "can it play Crysis?"

No, there is no 'release' date for this. Forever in development it definitely the plan, and they have said as much. That doesn't mean that there will never be a game but if you are looking to simply pick it up and play a finished game you should not look at Star Citizen. They will only stop development when they stop making money (hoping to be like WoW). Squadron 42 will probably be released at some point but CIG never talks about dates anymore.

It is still early days but Star Citizen is starting to actually be playable, wait a few years and we will have a real game.

I do not think a game can go in development for this long.

the fact is we're about to hit year 7 of development and every single player demo we've ever seen is still MIA in any game form.. Of the 100 systems that were promised they have 1 planet semi complete and 3 barren moons.. semi complete... .. FROM ONE SYSTEM LOL

This is what happens when you give a team millions of dollars and years of development time. One mighty impressive tech demo.

A lot of people think he never intended to produce a game. I think what happened is that he is a one trick pony. He keeps remaking Wing Commander/Privateer over and over. So, he decided to do it again in Cry-Engine, did a bunch of modeling, created a scene he knew would get the imagination of all the people that had been starved of space sims, and then hit the crowd-funding scene hoping just hoping to get the funding to finally create the hybrid Wing Commander/Privateer that he always wanted to make, and bonus it could be an MMO. And then it became the most successful crowd funding campaign of all time by far.

If you've ever heard of Strike Commander, you know this is no a good thing. Chris Roberts needs someone keeping him on track and reigning him in. Instead he had no supervision and immediately began adding features for which the money to develop was simply not even close to being there. Then he spent lord only knows how much on Hollyweird A-list actors for a video game instead of reasonably priced voice actors that were probably going to be better anyway because this is their medium as just one of the highlights of the way the man goes through cash.

I think there is a decent chance that Squadron 42 will actually be delivered playable. It will not have any open ended features and it's doubtful that the gameplay is even the slightest bit different from Wing Commander or Star Lancer. So no first person shooting. Maybe a multi-player dogfight mode, but probably not enough money to do a co-op mode. And that loan taken out is going to have to be repayed somehow, so it's doubtful the game sales will fund enough to get the MMO portion working.

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid... and I went ahead anyway.

If it's not coming out for the PC, it's dead to me.

That's the dumbest excuse I've ever read. Even World of Tanks released a "final" 1.0 version of their game after like... 7 years of development. They're still updating the game with new content, but effectively they finished everything they wanted to do for the core game. Star Citizen will be held to the same standards. If this goes on for 7 years with no full release, medical records will have expired before this game is completed. That's sad. That's something that should never be said, ever.
