To be fair, Steam's 30% was probably heavy handed from the start. I know it's industry standard retail margin, and "maybe" Valve avoided some vague industry backlash from retailers by sticking with the old model, but it's about time we start treating digital as a truly digital distribution model.

Right now I use GoG.com and Steam exclusively, GoG.com actually provides something unique (DRM Free executables), otherwise there just insn't anything compelling enough to pull me away from Steam.

The best outcome from all this is hopefully the added competition pushes Valve back into actually making games.

At least you can bypass the blizzard launcher and launch the game directly. Only time i use it is for updating. That has always been my major gripe with steam etc.

Uhm, i have tried with Hearthstone and Overwatch, and both need the Battle.net to be connected. After all, the license and card information is tied to the Battle.net account.

I have just launched Overwatch from overwatch.exe without the battle.net client running and was able to input my username and password from within the game and login. Just now played i a quickplay match, so sorry, no, ryan92084 is right. At least with overwatch you can launch the game without battle.net running.

Wow (Wow.exe) and HoS (HeroesSwitcher_x64.exe) can completely skip the launcher. I don't have Overwatch to confirm but @Neilthran has my back there. With a brief poke around I couldn't find a way to get hearthstone going without the launcher but at least you can set the launcher to autoclose when you start the game so it still beats steam in that regard.

They killed development because every time a company makes arena shooters, even actually good indie ones, no one buys them. Gamers are lying when they say they want arena shooters. At most they have tiny communities with hundreds to a few thousand players and any attempt to monetize is met with heavy blowback. Meanwhile "cinematic" AAA shooters like Battlefield V fail in a manner that still make arena shooters look like jokes in sales. I'm all for it, Valve isn't a good company.

So this is real. My main squeeze is Subnautica on the Unity engine. It runs fine on my AMD rig but most intel rigs choke on it. Anyhoo, Epic is advertising that they are going to sell Subnautica there and possibly it will be on the Unreal engine as well. Interesting times.

They are giving away Subnautica for Free from 12/14 to 12/27, and Super Meatboy after that.

Rest of thread..

I find it ironic that everyone complains about a lack of competition when it comes to ISP's, GPU's and CPU's but then hate having multiple places to buy games.
