[Epic]Announcing the Epic Games Store

Announcing the Epic Games Store

Quote:
Soon we'll launch the Epic Games store, and begin a long journey to advance the cause of all developers. The store will launch with a hand-curated set of games on PC and Mac, then it will open up more broadly to other games and to Android and other open platforms throughout 2019.

The Epic Games store will operate on the following principles:

All Developers Earn 88%
Developers receive 88% of revenue. There are no tiers or thresholds. Epic takes 12%. And if you’re using Unreal Engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty for sales on the Epic Games store, out of Epic’s 12%.
Dang. You aren't going to get a better deal than that, 88% and if you use UE4 they comp the engine cost. Personally, the thing that really caught my attention was the mention of "open platforms".

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid... and I went ahead anyway.

If it's not coming out for the PC, it's dead to me.

Not very happy with this company right now. Epic essentially killed/throttled the development of Unreal Tournament because of Fortnite. Until they give UT more love, I know a perfect location for their store.

Oh yes, I always wanted to segment my games even more because Steam and Origin and UPlay and GOG Galaxy and Epic and Windows Store wasn't quite cutting it.

Too lazy to read article. Is there exclusivity? 7 or 12% vs steams 33%(i think) is a big deal. I wonder if that goes along with micro-transactions too.

You're mad at them for focusing on a product making an infinite more amount of money than UT ever would?

Not quite how that's going to work, I think. I think that what's meant by that is that they waive any fees that comes with commercial release. They are still going to take 12% of the revenue generated from sales. THat's still the best deal any developer is going to get on any distribution platform.

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid... and I went ahead anyway.

Ohhh, this is a trap. Waive the fee for Unreal Engine and practically everything will try to run on it. Its a clever jab at Steam, but I would definitely look this gift horse in the mouth.

I'm a huge UT fan since times old but considering how much money fortnite is bringing in I cant blame them at all for making such a smart financial decision. Fortnite in its one iteration has reached and impacted more people than UT ever will, it's just a different time now. I do hope they bring back some people to work on UT4 with the excess money they have though.
