Quake 2 Gets A Vulkan Renderer 21 Years After Release

Quote:
In marking 21 years to the month since Quake II and as making a nice Christmas present anyhow, Polish programmer Krzysztof Kondrak has announced his work on vkQuake2. This open-source project provides a full-functioning version of Quake 2 atop the Vulkan API.
I have never finished any Quake game. Maybe I should get this.

I calculated the odds of this succeeding versus the odds I was doing something incredibly stupid... and I went ahead anyway.

If it's not coming out for the PC, it's dead to me.

This is awesome! The original Quake is what got me into PC gaming and Quake 2 kept me there. I still play Quake 2 to this day on Steam with Ultimate Quake 2 patch. Even the expansions were fun to play. I may give this a shot, though I don't even know how necessary it is to run atop Vulkan. Is the point to get the game running on platforms it doesn't currently run on (Linux, Android, etc.)?

Quake 2 is native OpenGL on Linux and is actually ported to Windows on release. To your question, Vulkan will make it easier to port to Android because the API is cross-platform (more so than standard OpenGL). However, its more beneficial point (along with DX12) is to spread draw calls over multiple low-speed threads with equal or approximate performance to a single high-speed thread. How much Quake 2 will actually benefit still needs to be benchmarked. I'm guessing not much, because the engine itself was never designed to be multi-threaded originally. Remember, it ran on single-core Pentiums at 133-233MHz.
