[dsogaming] AI-enhanced HD textures

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/this-...ks-incredible/

Quote:
Created by Doomworld’s member ‘hidfan’, this HD Texture Pack uses AI NeuralNetworks in order to improve all of the game’s textures. According to the modder, all textures and sprites have been upscaled 8X (with tons of AI artefacts), and then downscaled to a final 2X to restore a pixel art look. Now since there were a lot of AI artefacts, a lot of the HD and improved textures have been manually cleaned and all transparency masks were manually enhanced.

That's actually not too bad. It would be nice to see a bunch of classic 10/10 games get "remastered" this way.

These upscalers are great, sadly almost no one implements them in their products. You can get them to process images off of github often. This ESRGAN I think I saw it before but it's never like waifu2x easy to use, maybe later someone will make a package or made one when making these texture mods unless they just run it in command line with python.

The samples look oversharpened. The model could use a tweaking so it's not so full of sharpening artifacts/ringing.

It works well for cartoon style it seems (drawn) but not for realistic textures (wood, carpets, stone, ...). It tries to make dark parts darker and while the dark parts looked fine on a low res blurry texture on a higher resolution texture it gets too much. Keep the details but don't go crazy with the sharpening/ringing/contrast.

Next thing, how fast can it process? Bet as most of these upscalers it takes a long while for a single image even when using a modern GPU.

The results are better than I expected, honestly. I would definitely use these AI enhanced textures over the originals from what I can see.

This release seems to simply be improved textures, available for download? With the original texture maps having been processed by an AI algorithm to enhance them over their originals. But it's a static application of AI that'd have next to no performance impact on a modern GPU, due to it simply being updated textures and not an active application of AI.

Though either way, on the RTX series of GPUs if they were upscaling using AI and tensor cores, then I can only imagine a positive performance improvement via AI. DLSS from Nvidia after all, is upscaling each and every frame from a significantly lower resolution to a higher one with higher image quality.

These AI upscalers need a decent processing power. DLSS is simple in comparison that's why it can run at that decent speed. Waifu2x takes several seconds per image depending on settings and uses all compute cores of a GPU. This ESRGAN that adds details from it's network/model, who knows how fast it runs.

The textures... yeah nice, but then you can often get high res. packs of nonupscaled textures for moddable games, simple replacements with similar higher res. textures. Having these AI upscaled ones is more for people who must have the original texture look and don't want similar replacements. Plus it's faster and easier to batch upscale than to search for replacements on web, making sure it's seamless, in the right format, and so on.

Unfortunately many high res packs either have different looking textures from the originals changing the feel or just contain the originals upscaled, but darkened with plenty of noise. Also, many do not cover all textures creating a jarring effect.

This upscale technique, if perfected, could be the better solution.

Been using similar trick in Photoshop for upscaling years ago. First i upscaled it to very high value and then scaled it down to required resolution. Result was always better than direct scaling to required resolution.

This is pretty much an HQ8x upscale, then downscale to 2x, and then manually cleaned up by a human.

It looks really great, but that has at least as much to do with the human who touched up the textures as the AI.

Similar thing happening with Final Fantasy 7, results are impressive.
