I can't see how exclusives can be competitive when it is the very defination of monopoly

No it isn't?
A monopoly would be if steam was the only place to buy games. Or if steam owned all other platforms.
By your logic Samsung has a monopoly because they're the only people making Galaxy phones.

Siding with a specific store could be procompetitive by encouraging others to charge less.

I don't care one way or the other where they sell their game or why, quality of the game will always be what I care about.

exclusives means they have exclusive right to sell the game, no one else can. you cant buy the same game on another platform be it another console or distribution platform.

you can buy galaxy phones from various retailers and not just from samsung directly. samsung are just the developers.

if games are not exclusive this means its available on other distribution platforms and mediums, this would promote competitive pricing between platform where the deciding faction is which store you want to support given that you already wanted to buy the game.

epic being the exclusive distributor inhibits fair distribution of the game and the only way to get it is via epic and they can charge what ever they want and you are forced to swallow any messed up terms and agreements.

How does that analogy even make sense?

Epic didn't make the games they're trying to make exclusive. No single company involved was affiliated in any way before the Metro deal, for instance; not even the engine used was the UE.

Deep Silver (or 4A, by extension) couldn't be more far removed from Epic, but you're comparing the situation with Samsung making their own phones...

He's doing a good job of deflecting criticism away from their sketchy EULA agreement and borderline-spyware launcher, have to give him that.

It is what it is.

When will people realize this has been going on with video games for years?

Look at the console wars and there exclusives, but now since its on PC everyone is throwing a fit about the competition and its crazy.

Steam used to have exclusives and still does, remember when portal, tf2, cs and half life used to be the only games on steam (before coming to console)
Every company has been trying to get away from steam from years that is why they have been making there own platforms and launchers (origins, uplay, bethesda launcher, etc etc)
Everyone is just upset because it is EPIC who is doing it and everyone relates to EPIC for fortnite, since people hate the game they hate the company.

I look at these "exclusives" like I do the restaurant business, you go to certain restaurants because you like something that no one has, but say every restaurant had the same item and everything was prepared and served the exactly the same way, it would be boring and with no competition it would not change, but since there are so many options everyone has their own opinion about what they want and what they like so they go to there favorite places to eat.

This is actually extremely simple. Exclusives = monopoly as the company that has exclusive distribution rights for a product is the only place to purchase said product. No need to make comparisons or be trying to justify it.

The actual competition is the availability of a product on all distribution platforms, such that everyone has a fair chance to purchase said product. Epic store does nothing to facilitate such competition, in fact, it does exactly the opposite.

First party exclusives are perfectly fine such as Half-Life and Fortnite, because Valve and Epic respectively created those games and own those properties and of course can do what they please with them. Once again, no need to make comparisons or be trying to turn such cases into something they are not.

Therefore, I will simply wait a year/two until games are also available on Steam. I may purchase some of them on consoles instead if it makes sense to do so. I will not be using Epic Store or purchasing any games there until fair competition resumes and customers actually benefit.

going by restaurant analogy it means no one is allowed to make and distribute cheeseburgers except this restaurant only. fair competition happens when everyone can make and distribute cheeseburgers but they are free to change the price and dressing they used to make it to create their own unique bundle and flavor. the deciding factor should be which restaurant you wanna go to rather then which one you are forced to go to.

in epic's case the exclusivity means you are forced to get it only at epic and nowhere else. this is anti competitive
