There's zero need to release Morrowind open source. Openmw already accomplishes that and is already going to be making it so the game runs on Linux, etc fine and uses more modern graphical APIs, let alone any potential Vulkan forks or the like in future.

...And on that note, I highly recommend anyone who wants to try out Morrowind runs it via OpenMW: you can mod Morrowind so it runs better on modern systems but openmw is made for modern systems and still supports a hell of a lot of mods.

Give away the source code? They are still making broken games to this day and beyond on this source code including upcoming games Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6.

Is OpenMW actually the full game though? Aside from potential bugs (it's not like Morrowind is free of them as is) is it soup to nuts the full game?

I'm running a very heavily graphically modded Morrowind at 4k on my pc and it does well enough, but my 4790k is the bottleneck by far in towns still. I've been wanting to play the game on my laptop but even the base game runs like complete trash on my 2.4ghz puma laptop cpu. The game just doesn't like the modern architecture and runs like trash for me - again, mostly in towns.

Does OpenMW fix a lot of the cpu bottlenecking?

OpenMW isn't the game, it replaces the original bugged out game engine. You have to provide the game data.

They are also working on a new game engine for Skyrim.

Thanks. So being that I have the source material (multiple legit sources, don't worry) it would just use the data and replace the engine. So to answer my initial question, the game is 99% identical outside of a different engine running it?

Yes, other than new features the new engine provides.

Quote:
How is OpenMW/OpenMW-CS different from the original Morrowind engine?

  • Native support for macOS, Linux, and Windows
  • Improved physics and AI
  • Distant terrain
  • Save/Load dialogs organized by character
  • Quality of life UI improvements, such as being able to search for spells
  • Multiple quicksaves
  • World map adjusts automatically to fit new landmass from mods such as Tamriel Rebuilt
  • Support for up to 2147483646 loaded mods (up from 255 in the original Morrowind engine)
  • Since it was made from scratch, virtually no engine bugs from the original Morrowind
  • And much more
Additionally, OpenMW can be used for running entirely new games created with OpenMW-CS.

Kind of. The game is playable and beatable, with all original content, in openMW. The way that certain mechanics function is intended to be the same as Morrowind but that isn't always the case. They find idiosyncrasies and fix them in every release.

For example, the path finding and AI combat is still not quite right, and the other day they discovered that certain spell effects work differently when eating ingredients, but they were able to fix that one. It is still a work in progress.

For the time being, I still prefer to play the original game with the code patch.

Thanks for the info.

My main concern is performance in this case. For some reason my a8-6410 cpu is abysmal for Morrowind. It ran better on my old Athlon 64. Does OpenMW have considerably higher fps or at least make use of modern instruction sets (or runs properly multithreaded)?

Morrowind without mods runs poorly on the A8? MGEXE enhancements are about as inefficient as possible, but if all you use it for is to enable widescreen support and 1080p then you shouldn't have any issues.

I don't know the exact requirements, but openMW has higher system requirements than morrowind. You can check their page.
