I noticed this about a week ago and haven't seen it getting the attention it deserves. Since the info is in the video, nothing to quote so I will summarize.

Quixel is a company making a massive library of assets for UE4 and other 3d rendering engines using mega-scan tech.

Basically this is like next level photogrammetry. Looks amazing.

FYI the footage in the video is rendered in real time on a 1080Ti. It does not use any ray tracing.


Quixel doesn't seem to be greatly organized with their press announcements, probably because they market directly to developers for the most part, but essentially they are showing off that they now have a fairly complete library of assets for any devs to use. This tech and tech like it will be a huge step in photorealism once it shows up in games.

This is mind-blowing. Seriously... mind-blowing.

I have a 1080 Ti. It's hard to believe that my video card is now capable of such a feat, and yet... here we are.


EDIT: one thing to note. The real-time demo definitely is lower quality than the full-on render. I'm skeptical as to whether it is real-time, or not. However, even if it's rendered at 24-30 fps on a 1080 Ti... that's just insane.

Really shows what's possible with higher quality assets taken from real world sources.

I think everything in the demo is real time the same as the second video but they definitely used ideal camera angles to show it off. Even at its worst, looks better than anything out right now.

As some of the comments for the video noted there isn't even one blade of grass, no transparency effects and one light source.

Good God!!! That has to be about the most impressive (albeit short) display of real-time graphics rendering I have ever seen! I had no idea UE4 was capable of such photorealism.

Grass

There is only one light source because it's a nature scene. There are some scenes that have more light sources. Megascans work just as well with more light sources. If you look at their youtube channel, they have some indoor/city enviornments in some of their videos but by far most of their content is focused on outdoor stuff.

They have videos of megascans being used in other game engines as well. There is no limitation to the lighting, whatever the engine can do can be used with megascans just like any other 3d assets.
