This video does a great job show casing all the details of DxR. It reminds me of when DirectX 11 first came out, I was young but I bought 2 5770s around launch just to run the Unigine Heaven Benchmark all day. Not sure who recently mentioned it but DxR would take off if they pushed mGPU.

https://youtu.be/IQZoeRv1xeg
Yeah I noticed Tessaltion in Heaven too and in some brick walls and stairs in Crysis 2. Since then I have never looked for tessaltion in the game. It has become the norm. The do compare tess perf because of the perf difference but those were always extreme test. Even in early DX11 game with tesselation, you saw a similar drop in fps from both sides. It all depends on how much of the pipe AMD and Nvidia are going to allocate to RT in the future. If games become RT heavy then both will try to compete with stronger RT perf. Personally I think we will be stuck to whatever level consoles will get. PC will just get more things.

For me, it was never the feature/API. It was always the game first. When I think of DX11 I think of BF3. Vulkan I think of Doom, DX9 I think of HL2, DX10 I think of Crysis. Still waiting for the next level game which achieved a certain level of graphic fidelity because underneath it was using DX12, RT etc.

There have been rumblings you can re-purpose RT hardware for physics, ideally that’s the only thing people will do with it until someone can actually create fundamentally better gameplay by leveraging a Ray Traced engine.

This is exactly how I feel. I recently played through HL1 again (mind you, the source adaptation) and I just felt captivated to complete it which I rarely do on new titles.

All this processing power and yet both physics and AI still are stuck decades behind. The game FEAR from 2005 has better AI than most games... 14 years ago.

I do very often especially with the use of screen space reflections being much more common in games now. Turned it off in Gears 5 but can't figure out how to turn it off in Destiny 2. I'd rather they be static reflections than reflections that magically disappear from my screen when they should be reflecting.

I consider it another tool in the tool kit for the devs. We have been overdue for a quantum leap in graphics. If the devs can use it to make the game better i'm all for it. Besides the obvious atmosphere and immersion factor, any game involving the play of light will have some sort of effect on gameplay.

Ever since raytracing started being added to games with RTX (and even Minecraft mods), I've been much more aware of SSR and lifeless pieces of glass while gaming. It's one of those "cannot be unseen" things.

I mean, it's not like it looked "all right" before, but we get used to anything, I guess.

Wow! Never? Even in games with absolutely terrible shadows? Sure, if the game mechanic and/or story suck the game is not going to be good (assuming it has a story...) but to say the graphics does not add anything seems like an exaggeration. Maybe I just like my eye candy but the lighting has definitely broken the immersion at some points in many a game for me. Shadows especially are common offenders. I will be in the middle of some in-game event and then notice an obviously incorrect shadow (or lack thereof) and stop believing anything else. It is a constant reminder that the environment is fake. I can usually get back into it but the break is real and definitely harms my enjoyment of the game.

Lighting is the worst offender in my experiance, textures and effects I can get used to but bad lighting always looks fake. Sometimes it is not obvious what is wrong but it still screams fake. Lighting is one of those things our brains cue off of to figure out shapes of objects, depth, and many other things. It is more important than simply the pretty graphics.

Glad to see expansions coming in 2020. A short campaign was one of the larger critics of the game. Performance patch incoming as well. https://www.polygon.com/2019/9/11/20...-remedy-update
